I need your help.....

I have been going back and forth with the dealer over a problem with the ride of my car. They have had it for 2 days and state that they cannot find anything out of spec. The car has this weird vibration mostly at highway speeds. They claim it's fine. I say no. It's almost like a wheel and tire are of balance.

What I need from you guys is a suggestion. The suggested a different set of tires. They will put anything on I want in order to make me happy. What should I get?

Will they let you test drive another CLS at speed to see if it is the same?

I have no suggestions on tyres.

I suppose they would. They claim that the mechanic drove another, he thinks it feels the same. I have and Integra 4dr as a loaner. Although it's smaller and "buzzier" it does not have the issue my car seems to be suffering from.

What kind of vibration? In the wheel or seat of the pants? When does it happen?

It's in the floor and seat. It is most noticable from 40 MPH and up. the faster you go, the faster it gets. I drive with my right leg up against the center console. After driving for 3 or 4 miles on the freeway , I can't NOT notice it. Like it said it's almost like a wheel and tire are out of blanace, yet I have had them done 3 times now.

If it is an actual problem with the tires, it may be due to the fact that yours are simply defective. Therefore, you could just get another set of stock tires if you like them. If you want performance tires, I'd suggest the Dunlop SP9000s (they're cheap), but if the dealer is paying then perhaps you should go with something a little more pricey such as some Pirelli P7000s.

How would you rate the the stiffness of the Pirelli's or Dunlops when comparing them to the stock rubber.

I'd get the Dunlop SP Sport 5000's. Being in Michigan, I would presume you'd want an all-season tire. This is the best Ultra-High Performance tire that fits a type-S and has snow traction. Unfortunately, we have an odd-ball size that many tire makers don't support. You can check out a review at the Tire Rack, gere's the link: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/du_s5000_rd.html

Good Luck!

A couple of suggestions ... first rotate the tires. If the vibration is still there, try switching the two front tires. If it is the tires, perhaps the rotating/changing will change/eliminate the vibration and you will know to change them.

this happened to me after the 15k maintenence. the steering wheel would shake when driving above 60. after they refused to help me out and said they noticed nothing, i RAISED UTTER HELL in both the showroom and the service department. after calming me down the service manager said he'd "high speed balance" them. well, it worked and the car didn't shake at all anymore. he urged me to call him from the highway so i could tell him everything was ok. cool guy.

I'd take my car to a good alignment/balancing shop. They should be able to do a speed balancing and in some cases they can tell you if there is a problem with the tires during the process.

If the independent shop can fix your problem, bring the bill to the dealership and have them pay for it.

I have this problem but only ocassionally with my stock tires and wheels. At certain speeds and on the right type of bumpy road, the tires shake and bounce for a long time even after I speed up. If I slow down, it seems to help and I can speed back up again with no problem. Seems to happen about once a week.

The CL is not a plush luxury coupe quite the contrary. Try this. Drive w/o shoes (if that's illegal in your state, use sandals) and you will feel everything. Almost as if your using your feet like on the Flintstones.

Remember you're going to know the small differences in how your car rides; the dealer? Not only will he be unable to detect it, but he also wouldn't admit it even if he did.

P.S. No joke on the barefoot driving and KS. I'm pretty sure it's illegal in this state but maybe someone in MS or IA or SC can check it out. j/k

Oh, There is no doubt that I am going to feel every single road anomoly with this vehicle. But I have studied every road I travel extensivley. It's not road slats, or ripples. It's not cracks or potholes. My wife even notices it, and I have no doubt that any of you would compared to your cars. The best way I can explain it, is that something "rotational" is out of balance.

It sounds like you might have a cord separation happening. The cords inside the tire have either separated or broken. If you spin it on a balancer you can sometimes see a bump or depression in the tread, looking perpendicular to the rotation, or a peak or valley in the side wall of the tire. Don't forget you can balance a square, that doesn't mean it will roll smooth!
