I need a new tire....
I need a new tire....
...but not new rims, I'm keeping the stock rims for now. I have a slow leak in one tire and the nail damaged it beyond repair and the tire needs to be replaced asap.
I've done the search and I see a lot of recommendations on different tires besides the stock one. Please help me make up my mind, I need your opinions:
1)Replace one tire with the exact same stock tire. Pros: I can take my time deciding on a new set of 4 tires later this summer after I make it to a meet someplace where I can see firsthand what some of you guys are doing. Can I replace just one tire or do they have to be in 2's?
2)Replace two tires, keep the other used one as a spare, and think about new tires and rims maybe next year. My current tires have 30k on them.
3)Go for new tires and/or new rims now. No time is like the present time.
4) Some other solution I haven't thought of?
Can I use 215/45/17s on the stock rims? Will my bad tire (which I have to put air in every morning) hold up for another couple of weeks?
TIA

Not sure on sizes, but just remember that it is always better to replace tires in either pairs and even better to replace all four at a time. If you are going to change the size or type, then you would most likely replace all four so that there is no difference in balance. Just my .02

NO!
They are way undersize.
(225/45-17 or 235/45-17 [239/45-17 has the rolling radius of the stock 215/50-17s])
On the other hand, you can be a "pioneer" in this area and be the first person to "try" this size.
All kidding aside, you would be well advised to get 4 of the same brand tire and upgrade at the same time. Cars in general don't like "mixed" tire sets, and I'm quite sure the VSA would not be "thrilled" with mixed tires.
(just an opinion...)

1. I had the Toyo 235/45-17s on stock rims, the bummer is with scratching the rims for an aligment -- believe me. I did it and they fit.
2. I'm not sure about the sig with the 235/40-17 -- Is this correct, 'cause the rim width is even more stringent than the 45 series.
3. Toyo makes a 215/50-17. (Only 91Y rated)
Lots of people are running the 225/45-17s and 235/45-17s on their cars. I think the 225s may cause some problems with NAVI at maximum wear, but there is no proof of this (Only Acura's subtle warnings...) (And I hope I don't have to put up the math again)
So, if you want to stay stock and keep the rolling radius in the "area" of the stock 215/50-17, you can choose from:
215/50-17 (go to www.tirerack.com)
225/45-17
235/45-17
You will find many more choices in the 45 series tires.
You also haven't mentioned if you want all-season, dry, or dry-wet...

You can always use that tire calculator thing to see if the new tires will have any bad effect as to speedo calibration.

Stock for now.
amir, I'm not against mods, if you can afford them, that's great. I'd rather spend money on non-performance mods, but in this case, I don't have much of a choice with a blown tire. Otherwise stock rims and stock tires for me. If I can pay just a bit more and step up, that's great. I have well over 30k on my car since 3/31/2000, oh well, at least I've had fun so far.
I'll check out tirerack and the calculator but I'd rather purchase used from someone here....

Chris: Using the Tire Calculator that tw1112 put up, your speedometer reading is almost 4.2% too fast with the 235/40-17.
tw1112: Thanks for posting that tool. I wish I had it when I was looking for wheels/tires. But I am settled now on my choices of rims (Zenetti Valeo 17x8) and tires (Toyo Proxes T1-S in 235/45-17).
kensteele: I guess it's i,portant to keep the overall diameter of the replacement tire as close as possible to the stock tire. The 'series' number (40, 45, 50, etc.) is the 'aspect ratio.' It is the percentage of the sidewall-to-sidewall dimension.
Well, gotta run. Will try to post example later, but, once you find a tire width (first number) that is best suited for your rim width, the next thing is to select a series (middle number) that, for the tire width selected, will give you as close as possible O.D. as the stock tires, presuming you are keeping the same (last number) 17" rim.
Hope this helps.
