i know this is the wrong forum but i got bellsouth adsl modem, itis running trhough te usb port on my sony laptop running windows 98 1st edtion, when i install all the software for the alcatel usb modem an sign on from the instaltion wizard it works perfect, but when i try to start it from the shortcuts or the network folder, it says that the"the computer i a dailing to is not responding"
i spent 4 hours on the phne with custmer service tech supprt, and we uninstalled the software three times wth the sae result.
my next step is to reformatthe hard drive drive and reload windows and all ohther programs, bellsouth ran numerous test and theproblem is def in the laptop please some one help me out

Check to see if the USB port is active on the laptop. I have had that problem before many times with notebooks. Look in the BIOS to see or else plus in any other USB device to see if it works. Ill check back later to see if that helped ya.

Reformatting should be the last resort. also example of why NOT to get a vaio.

okay about your problem.

First make sure in th bios usb is enabled. Should be by default. Also check to make sure in the bios if it asks plug and play os check yes.
Next if both features are enabled, go to sony's site download a bios update for your laptop and flash your bios. Then, double check the settings in your bios and see if win98 recognizes they usb device. if it does not work go buy or borrow any kind of usb device, (mouse scanner,camera) for instance and test it w/ your usb port. if it does work then you might have a problem w/ your usb modem. I really couldn't understand if you where saying it signs on fine and gives u a valid connection during the inital setup or if the setup completed successfully. Also are you using winpoet for your dsl?

Oh, and while your at the sony site, see if they have a hardware diagnostic software where it runs a test on your hardware. usually a small program that 'll fit on disk which runs in dos.

I think you could have a bad dsl modem. but we'll see.

USB sucks. Its slow, buggy, and a resource hog. Its nothing but trouble. Get an Ethernet DSL modem and an Ethernet card for your computer. To make life even better and eliminate the PPPoE dialer from your computer, get a router like the Netgear RP114 that handles it for you. Then you just need a standard computer (any OS) with a standard (non kludged) TCP/IP stack.

why don't you install it to you desktop and see if it is the modem itself. viaos kick butt!
