FWIW - you stand a better chance of beating tough competition shifting down at 30 then at 25. You are at a higher RPM with better HP/tq, which is where these VTECs love to be.

And to my knowledge or experience, shiftgate is the only way to get a quick and clean downshift at 30.

Yeah I read about this in another thread somewhere about two months ago now. I tried it back then. I don't know if I saw it on this forrum or acura-tl.com.

 

Wow, if Acura reps ever read this post they will convince themselves that tranny failures are due to driver abuse. Using gate shift to slam it in D1 at 30mph is crazy!

 

It is not crazy. Any mechanic will know that to be true. And yes, I was one once.

I even mentioned this to my Acura rep because we got to talking about performance and running certain cars. He was surprised it would do it and found no harm in it.

Bottom line is that at 30mph you are no pushing the RPMs to high to create any real concerns for either the tranny or engine.

And if Honda has an issue with that, they should have sold us a 60HP TLS instead, and or the tranny was a piece of $hit to begin with.

I don't understand what the 2-1 shift commotion is all about. When in SS, if I'm in second and cruising at around 20-25mph all I have to do is mash the gas and the car instantly goes into first.

Probably not.

It certainly wasn't common knowledge when I made that post over a year ago. At the time I recall most people moaning that you can't get to 1st since SS doesn't let you shift down.

 

to get into first just matters how fast you are going and when you go to WOT is how you get to use first. I never shiffed into first with ss just able to get into it when WOT in between 15-20 mph

 

Directly from the manual:

"Even with the Sequential SportShift Mode selected, the transmission will automatically upshift and DOWNSHIFT between first and second gear."

I guess this is another case of, "READ THE MANUAL!"

 

ACutally, that is suppossed to happen...acura made it that way..for example, if ur in 2nd or 3rd in ss mode and all of a sudden u wanna go fast and u jam the gas, the computer recognizes the need for the car to pull harder, thus the only way it can do that is to automatically shift it into 1st....what is happening to u is perfectly NORMAL...try this next time....from a start, shift to 2nd gear...without shifting to third, give the car some gas...watch the rpm go up and before u hit 40mph...id say around 25-30, floor ur car all the way....i guarantee u that the car will automatically downshift into 1st....if uve past 40mph, then its too late...u can only upshift....same goes for when ur comming to a rolling stop and ur speed is below 40 mph...anytime u floor it under those conditions, the car will shift into 1st.

i wonder if theres anyway we can modify our ecu so we can control first gear in SS? my friend did it on his s4, he can control 2-1 downshift on his tiptronic and it shitfs faster too
