How's the '01 CL Type S?

Whassup every1, I'm new and lookin for an '01 CL Type S. However ive got a few ?'s in mind.

First off, stock, how does the car ride (is it smooth or bouncy or what?) If i were to lower it w/ either Comptech's or Eibach's, would it be bouncy. Basically is it necessary to get shocks to make it back to smooth again?

Are the tranny's really that bad?

How's the speed on these things stock?

Do they handle nicely on turns and such?

How's the road noise (rattling/engine soung when flooring it, and at cruising speeds)?

Also, if i were to get 18s, would it rub? What is the proper tire size i should get with 18s, and what offset should i get?

Thanks alot for your guys help!

John

01 CL-S

Dem 1K..............I bought my '01 new and my wife now drives it daily. 35K miles on it and so far, perfect. Only mod we have is Comptech sways which helped solve the roll I felt from driving this 3500# car. I noticed the 63/37 weight balance much more in this car than my SVT Focus due to the Acura's "porky" weight. Handles much better now, and feels more connected. No road noise and Sumitomo tires are quiet and handle better than original Michelins. Well insulated vehicle (which probably explains the bulk).....quiet car at speed. Fast stock, no tranny problems yet and no rattles other than the sunroof fix we had done. A lot of people here have been plagued by rattles, so driving/buying a used one will be better in that regard because things will have loosened up and be apparent. Good luck in your search.

bought my 2001 type-s 5 mar 2000. i like the car very much even though i have had new brakes at 51,000 miles and a new tranny last week at 59,000 miles - all covered under warranty. the car provides a very nice balance between luxury and performance. don't know of any other vehicle which combines the two so well.

this is my 5th honda and i have never had one not start or leave me stranded. also i like the service i receive from acura dealers.

bought 01 cls auto new 4/01. before delivery had lowering springs installed, left stock shocks, upgraded brakes with ss lines, installed h/d sways. dumped stock tires for bridgestone pp s-03. now handling and braking match drive-train. overall approx 32k investment. solid value ! good luck.

it sucks, why buy a car with a known transmission problem.
Rattle issues are rediculous as well.

Overall I think it's a good car. You can't really beat the bang for the buck either. Go for it.

I have one of the few sudnance gold 01's and I love the car. I bought the car because I couldn't find anything else out there that gave me this much "bang for the buck." Yes there are some issues with the car but there are issues with any car out there! ...trust me...I also own a new VW and the Acura is soooooo much more dependable! And with the warrranty on the tranny now being exteneded to 100K miles, I have no qualms about recommending this car.

I am at 69,000 miles and it still drives like the day I got it. I just love that growl when accelerating in 2nd!

I had the shocks and springs replaced at 67k miles and I was sooo glad that I did it (comptechs and koni yellows). The ride is a sportier and you feel iregularities in the pavement more but the handling better matches how the car accelerates.

I'm on my 2nd transmission and at the last maintenance, my service rep said all looked good inside (so knock on wood!).

I'd still do my homework before buying one......

Excellent car, Like others stated best bang for your buck. Yes this car CAN have tranny problems, but just try to find one with really low miles. All cars have problems, and some people experience problems more than others, like flipping a coin, you never know.
I love my 01 CL-S!!

Bought mine on 8/2000. Still going strong at 68k miles. Stock except the CAI. Replaced the SRS, actuator, the driver-side door arm rest and the expensive post-it tray.

I noticed my mileage has dropped (maybe the bp gas or using AC more.)

U should be able to get a good deal since most are jumping ship.

Thanks for all the replies you guys

I have yet another question. I dont know much about HID kits or what not, and from reading i see that the CL Type S has Xenon HIDs? However when i have seen them they're just like bright white lights....how would i go about getting the lights like the Beamers/MBZ or what not??

Our HID's are quite blue/white bright. Don't think you'd need anymore at least on the low beams. High beams come on in addition to the lows and they need help. Since they are halogen bulbs the "high beam portion" of light is pretty yellow in comparison. I'm going to try Sylvania's new 25% brighter bulbs at Sylvania.com

haha HIDs and Xenons are the same thing..some lights look bluer/purpler than ours because of either the housing or the rating...but regardless we have the same type of headlights

i thought Xenon's were the like....$20-40 bulbs that u can buy, for example, Nokya's, Sylvia's, Showoff's etc to dress up your lights to LOOK like HIDs. And i thougth HIDs were like $500 kits or something w/ a different ballast and waht not?

HID (High Intensity Discharge) is the generic term for a lighting system that uses a step up transformer to produce enough power to cause the inert gas in the bulb to glow...plasma if you like. Automotive bulbs use Xenon gas.

The engine sound when flooring it in second at around 4500-5000 RPMs is cream-your-pants good. This car sounds better than any other i've ever ridden in.

I love my 01 CL TypeS. Alas, I'm selling it. I know how to drive stick now, so I want a manual trans car.

If you weren't on the opposite coast, I'd say maybe it's the car for you.

Then again, if you want to come out here and drive it back home, maybe it is the car for you!

Here are all the details:

I'm not sure yet, mostly because I lurk forums for every car I'm interested in and they all seem to have problems. lol

WRX - heavy clutch not friendly to daily driving commute and somewhat vague engagement, 5-speed is weak and junky and sometimes doesn't go into gears on first try. Compared to the STi's strong 6speed, but STi is too much money and is not friendly for daily driving.

Evo8 - transmission makes odd noises on deceleration, clutch is less vague and not as heavy as WRX's but is apparently quite weak and several owners have had theirs replaced within a few thousand miles. tacky Mitsu interior with poor ergonomics.

S2000 - 04 model year around the corner. 03s are nice but not sure if small 2door RWD 'vert is a practical daily driver, especially here where it snows in the winter.

RSX TypeS - apparently Acura is the only brand making a car with a reliable, strong transmission. awesome 6speed, super-easy clutch. Too bad the car looks really dinky stock.

350Z - lots of quality control issues, transmission issues as well.

It's funny, I thought looking at manual trans cars would eliminate transmission issues. =\

Basically at this point I'm just wary of dumping hard-earned money into a car to have a bunch of headaches with it that aren't of my own choosing (like if I mod something and it breaks, that's my fault fair-and-square, but if it's a piece of junk from the factory, that is unacceptable).

So really I'm not sure what I'd get to replace the CLS yet. But I have a beater car to drive in the meantime, so the CLS is definitely for sale.

Not interested in rotary-powered cars but thanks for the suggestion.

Budget range is basically up to $29k, preferably lower. Jap cars only. Domestics are out of the running, same with German cars (not that any of their good ones are under $30k anyway).

I have to say I really am thankful I chose an Acura back in 2001 because it's been a fairly hassle and trouble free car. Now that I work at the dealership I bought mine from I get to see that they rarely ever have a serious issue.

The RSX especially seems fairly bullet-proof in the drivetrain aside from people mis-shifting and blowing their engine.

Maybe I'll get one of those and strap a turbo on it.

Weird. Private party pricing for my car in my area is $19.5k. I'm asking $21.9k because of the excellent condition and extras that are included.

Heck my dealership offered me $18.5k-19k for trade-in value which is always lower than private party.

Don't get me wrong, you can definitely find one out there in your price range, it just won't be as well kept or featured as mine.

I was looking through the latest AutoTrader magazine for my area and found several cars priced within $1k of mine, some higher mileage, some non TypeS, so I think I'm asking just right.
