How to tell when the odometer was backed up??
I am trying to find out how to tell when the odometer on a Cl was backed up. I got screwed with that on my last car and i don't want it to happen again. Any feedback would be apreciated.
You can't 'roll' back the miles on a 2nd gen CL - at least not to my knowledge! The ECU captures mileage (like the odometer)... so that could be a way to check. Although I don't know of an instrument that can do this... if there IS ONE!
I suppose one way to change the mileage is to get a new instrument-cluster, but the VIN # is stamped there along with a serial #... so if they don't match up... you know something is up!

It can be done, but IF someone here knew, they wouldn't (shouldn't) say how.
Knowing that it can be done WITHOUT physical damage to the car (markings and such) should be a good enough answer.
I would highly doubt that this was done. It would be easier (or shall I say less hard) to reset the miles back to zer0).
Hope that helps some.

There is an insturment that you hook up and you can reset the odometer to any mile you want. I saw one for sale and it only costed $1000. The miles are only stored in the cluster.
If someone used one of these you would have no idea. If they did it another way like taking the cluster out and hooking it

Dunno if this is paranoid or not, but you could also buy a new instrument cluster, drive around (put on the miles) using the new instrument cluster, then reinstall the old one.
Your old one should register the same miles as the day you replaced it with a new one.
