How to paint chrome window trim, remove or tape off?

I'm going to have my chrome window mouldings painted black. I'd like em to look professional. My painter says they are hard to remove and not break clips and to reisntall perfectly. Says we might have to tape them off. What have other people done?

what type of paint are you going to be using?

regular paint will not adhere to the "chrome"
you will need to sand them down. which would be best to take off the moldings.

if you're going to use plastidip, mask off with tape then spray plastidip. Very easy.

your third option would be to vinyl the moldings.

painting body color and clear coat, so they will be scuffed, primed, based, n cleared.

Just found this link:

so maybe I'll have him remove the ones possible and leave the rear window ones on car

I plasti dipped mine. Not perminent obivously but that was a good thing IMO. If I didn't like it I could always take it off...but it would just be a pain in the ass! A long as you clean the trim well and get a nice, thick, even layer it looks just as good!

I would give it a quick scratch with some sandpaper and that will increase the adhesion by loads.

Normally the rule of thumb is to remove what ur painting and isolate it so u can paint the entire thing. Then u don't have to tape off the car or whatever u are painting to prevent overspray.

The good news tho is paint will come off glass with a blade and clearcoat with isopropyl or a clay bar. So u don't have to worry too much about being perfect with ur tape job.

But u will have to do a fair amount of covering things up cause paint travels depending on wind conditions etc. And u find out u should have taped off a lot more. I am guilty of this. That's where the clay bar really comes in

I used justnspace's technique on trim pieces....involving taking them out and sanding them before paint. IMO it looks better and lasts a long time.
