How much oil?????

OK - i took my cls into david mcdavid for 7500 mile service. i brought 5 quarts of mobil 1 b/c the manual says the car takes 4.6 quarts of oil. i get home and notice that they left 1 quart in the trunk, so they only used 4 quarts. but they put some kind of oil additive in there.

i checked my oil level last night and it was barely between those 2 holes in the stick.

did they put enough oil in my car or what? i'm gonna call them soon.

thanks

My last car being a v6 i use to buy the box of mobil 1 from track auto (6 inside) and everytime I got my oil changed they would only use 5 and leave 1 in the box. so every 6th time I would have 5 bottles for the oil change.

Same w/ my S. when I brought in a box of mobil 1 they left 1 in the box. and they also put some m-10 or some crap addictive in that I didn't request.

I would add the 5th quart. I don't know why the wouldn't add it or why they thought they didn't need to.

I am checking my oil tonight when I get home, I had my 15K service last Thursday and want to make sure the oil level is correct, otherwise like you I will pitch a fit.

Be careful not to overfill. Overfilling is almost as bad as underfilling.

The dealers I've been to like to hang on to the extra oil. I've had so many encounters where I've had to ask for the rest of my oil (I'd just bring them a new case of Mobil 1, and I guess they though they could keep the extras or something as a tip).

On my last change, they used 5 "bottles" of the Mobil 1, but they skipped the additives and the level seems to be about right. I'll check the level again in a few weeks.

GTO is right about the overfilling

thanks guys. i called my service rep at the dealer and he said they usually put 4.5 quarts in and that if it seems a little low to add 1/4 quart. I'll start with that so I don't overfill. I know when I check the oil the engine should be warm, but how warm? Like idle the car for 2 minutes warm or drive it for 10 minutes or what? Also, should it be warm when I add the oil?

You just want to make sure that the oil is fully circulated so that you get a true measure of how much is in there. At rest or cold there will be more oil in the crankcase because it all drips back down there. I don't think the heat is too much of a factor. Maybe some of the harder core tech guys can jump in here.
