I've seen people drive without hoods and sometimes body panels missing without problems, so I doubt the foam is necessary either.

the insulation is for engine sounds, so you can remove it if you're willing to live with a little more noise.

some people made mention of it hurting the paint... i dont care about noise control.

reason i'm asking, cf hood is coming, so i wasn't sure if i needed to swap it. but i dont see why it would damage the hood.

Heat from the engine.

i know the engine makes heat, but is it really enough to damage paint, or fiberglass/cf. i figure exhaust system gets hotter than that area and the bumper is fine.

On the Acura I like it on. It looks good. On my Explorer, it was all torn & nasty looking & I took it off. Been that way for 2 years in 90+ heat, & 3K mile road trips & the paint is fine.
You should be alright. It has a few uses.
muffles engine noise
Makes the engine bay pretty
muffles heat
And I heard in case of a fire the clips melt & the insulation falls down to smuther the fire.

thanks guys.

i've heard its main use is against a fire and also engine noise.

i ran a turbo in my last car and it sat real close to the hood. the thing used to get red hot. in the winter it would melt the ice right off, lol, paint was fine.

the heat insulation theory is a good one, but I doubt it hurts without the insulation, considering there are many cars out there without this insulation under the hood.

Basically it's for noise reduction and to insulate the heat generated from the engine. You'll notice that the hood will be super hot when you take it off...just be careful touching the hood when you open it up.
