Honda UNDERRATING ENGINE NUMBERS!

This is the dynojet for the accord k24a1 engine. Same as the TSX except it only has 2 cam lobs not the 3 like the k24a2. It is supposed to have 160hp/160ft-lbs at the crank but on the dyno it is showing 139hp/149ft-lbs of trq. This if for the 5 speed MANUAL TRANSMISSION.

The dyno is from TOV and they seem to think that honda has underrated the engine by about 15hp or so. That being said, I am VERY interested in seeing dyno's of the TSX.

Wow, that is pretty nice. It continues to surprise me what technology can get out of even 4 cylinders nowadays. I can't wait for my buddy to get his dyno running so I can do some runs!

either they under rate it or they have one hell of a tranny. Either way i would get that over the v-6 since it is many thousands less and gets well over 30 mpg

i don't see where they're getting 15hp from, grassroots dynoed the si at 137hp. if a lot of accords dyno at 139+ then its definately a strong '160hp', but not to the extent they are saying. hard to tell with only one car.

a 175hp motor with 15% loss-standard for a fwd manual would be 149hp.

They dynoed two cars and they netted the similar results.

I own a 03 Accord 4 cylinder, but with an automatic. It feels strong for a 4-banger, but not 175 hp strong. I am guessing the auto zaps much more power than the manual

Hey guys ... maybe I should dyno my TSX?? I have like 1600 miles on it ...

Anyone know a place that can do it near Raleigh, NC and now much it would cost? I can probably take one for the team on this !

I saw a 03 or 04 Accord 4-popper(with a CAI) run against a new(or newer) Sentra Spec V SE-R. It was all the Spec V had to beat it. in the 1/4 mile i'd say it at the most won by at the most a car length.

I haven't drove a new Accord but I've drove a Spec V. those are pretty spunky little cars.

I know i should be loyal to Honda but if i wanted a pocket rocket(like Civic Si,Spec V,GTi(soon to be 2 liter turbo)(no R32 or VR6),
I'd definately go with the Spec V.

Here's some food for thought.

Did you know that the jap auto makers have an understanding that they will not make a production engine for their cars that are rated ABOVE 300 HP? Think about it, name one car that the japs have introduced to america greater than 300 hp. I for one can not think of one. Anyway, that's what I've been told, but this info could be wrong, can anyone name any greater that 300 hp? I'd say they have to be getting close to having an all out HP war like the big 3 here and the European auto makers. The current RL is pushing it, so maybeee........

This is not something new among auto manufacturers.

VW does the same thing with their engines by underrating their horsepower to prevent a cut in sales on the Audi side. Well known fact among the VR6 and 1.8T guys.

Its because Japan has a law were no car can have more than 300hp. Thats why Skylines were rated at only 276hp, the NSX at 290hp, and everyone considers them to be underrated. I heard though that they may be getting rid of this rule soon, so you're right, once the law is gone expect to see a HP war emerge between the Japanese auto makers.

the next generation WRX sti I can about promise you it will be. I think 2006 or 2007 it will hit U.S. soil. but the current Sti is 300 HP i'd say it will atleast be 350. either they'll find some loop hole or build it here in the states.
another one getting close is the Evo 8. the MR edition 276 HP. next generation i think will be at or over 300 HP. I think that's one thing that's hurting Evo in the Evo vs WRX Sti race.

from all races i've watched in stright line racing the WRX wins. in like autocross or curves the Sti wins. if the both of them are stock. if the Evo had a little more spunk (from the factory) it would not only handle awsome it would be HELLA FAST.

AFAIK, there was no actual law regarding the HP limit. Rather a "gentleman's agreement" between the Japanese automakers. (This is why the 4.0L Lexus V8s never appeared in JDM Toyotas; ditto for Infiniti V8s in JDM Nissans.)

This agreement was officially broken when Honda released the new Honda Legend (Acura RL) this year. So the gloves are off now.

A lot of people are a bit suspicious of Vtec.net dynos since they posted one of this "underrated" 2.2L 4cyl:

Link to more info

Not sure if they had an uncalibrated dyno or what but I dont know of any 2004 S2000 dynos that have reproduced those numbers. I've seen some put down more hp (like 220whp) on the 2004-2005s ... which is still pretty damn impressive for a little 4 cyl.

EDIT: Oops, didn't realize that this post was an old ass post that got bumped up

Yep, Accord 4-banger 139.5whp/149wtq dyno would be equal
168HP/179TQ (17% loss MT) better then 160HP/161TQ advertised. Thanks to 87mm bore and 99mm stroke

And here is the TSX dyno

I know this is an old thread but...

I'm sure Honda does underrate some of their motors. The 2000+ NSX has dyno'd at 265+whp. Given that the car is rated at 290hp, that's only a 8-9% drivetrain loss. Possible? Yes; Likely? No. Also, the NSX weighs like 3200lbs roughly? Yet it runs about 13.4 @ 103mph bone stock with only 290 hp? Riiiiiiiiiiiiight.
