Hi guys. New to this forum.

Just wanted to say what's up. I've been reading this forum for about a month and finally decided to sign up.
Currently I have a 97 Maxima, but I'm getting my wallet ready to buy a 02 CL type S the coming spring. I still haven't decided on whether I should wait for a 6-speed tranny or no.
I had a chance to look at CLS up close at the Bayside Expo Center auto show in Boston. In my opinion, it's a great looking car and very comfortable inside. I'm a pretty tall guy, 6'5" so coupe will work better for me than a 4-door.
I'm just curious (sorry if someone asked this already) about stock tires. 215/50-17 seems to be a pretty narrow tire for a 17" rim. Will I be able to upgrade the size up to 235/45-17 or at least 225/50-17? I like the way stock rims look, so I'm not looking for new ones, but I would like to get wider tires. Any recommendations?

Thanks

Stock Type-S tires are 215/55/17..the rim on the CL Type-S is 17x7...so, it takes up to 235s....235/40/17 is the widest on the rim and the closest to keeping stock diameter....the recommended tire would actually be 225/45/17....I think the 235s are a bit wide, but the 225s give you the best combo of grip/drivability/protection for the stock rim.
As for which brand of tires....
Kumhos....best tire for those on a budget.
Re730s and Toyos...the choice of most willing to spend a few extra bucks over the Kumhos...(alright, maybe $30-40)
S-03s/S-02s...the Holy Grail of tires for the time being...

Other tires....less popular on the forum
Paradas
Nittos

You can definately upgrade to wider tires. Many people have 235's, but in my opinion 225 are best (they have a minimal adverse effect on the speedo and things like that). As you can see in my signature below, I have Nokian NRW tires. They are 225/45's and improve the car's handlig pretty substantially. But then again, two layers of hockey tape on the rims would probably improve the tire quality compared to the stock tires.

P.S.- Welcome to the Forum!!!

Welcome

Hey, I'm a newbie too! I have to say that this forum is great for answering many questions new Acura TL/CL owners may have. It's a little addictive, though. I'm supposed to be working now! (ah, screw work!)
Seriously, tho..welcome and good luck getting your new ride.

I have the stock tires still on my car at 21000 miles and I still think they suck, but without some suspension work, they will be okay until they get some miles on them. I think the sway bars will probably be the first mod that will really make you realize how crappy the stock tires handle. I would recommend to save the money early to get springs and sways before you spend money on replacing new tires. Just my opinion.

Welcome to the board!

Check out the FAQ in my sig for lots of info about the CL-S.

Hiya! Welcome!

If you're 6'5", you might have a little trouble even in the CL. I'm 6'1" and I have about 2-3" clearance above my head. I would definitely take one for a test drive now to make sure you can fit comfortably, just in case.

welcome to the board!

and yes, 235/45/17 will fit fine on the stock rims... i used to have 235/40/17... but 235 is as wide as it goes on a 7'' width rim

Actually, I think that WHOMEVER you are, you will be welcomed to this board. Unless, of course, I have stumbled upon some "club". I thought it was all about the car. Maybe I am wrong.

Thanks everyone

I will definitely look into some tire/suspension upgrades just like I did for my max.

You know, it's pretty hard to choose the right car for a tall guy like myself. Maximas, especially the 02 one, have a lot of leg and head room but I decided to go with something different, plus I've always wanted a coupe. I sat in 02 CL-S and it was pretty roomy.
I have long legs, so head clearance doesn't bother me that much

Oh, and hell yeah these forums are addictive. I also post at Maxima.org and my post count there is about 3400 posts

Do you know if 6-speed CL-S will be in production any time soon? Automagic is nice, especially 5-speed, but same car with a manual tranny should be a little faster.

BTW, are there any CL owners in Boston area? Just wondering.

Take care.
