Here I sit broke down

Can't move the shifter out of park. Looked at threads, checked number 9 in the drivers side of the dash and number 47 in front of the firewall. Both fuses are good. Pretty sure it's the brake switch. 165 mi away from home. Just got gas before it failed and the brake lights were on and the lights in the car were off. Stopped at a store after that and that's when the failure started. Guess I'll have to wait overnight in the car and glad it is warm in Deerfield Beach, Florida.
Advance and Napa are a mile down the road. Advance has the brake switch for $34 before discount according to their website. Hope that's what it is. Glad I can get to it and had tools in the trunk. See what happens in about 6 hours.

Any thoughts?

Sometimes the little nub on the pedal that the brake switch touches when the pedal is not applied breaks off. When that happens the plunger will go all the way thru the hole. If it does just find something to plug the hole.

The brake switch itself should be able to be bypassed by jumping the pins to ground out the wire. small paperclip or small wire.

If it is the brake pedal stopper pad, as 619rcr suggests, look for pieces of them below on the floor, that's a tell tale sign.

They looked intact. Put the new brake switch in and good to go. Original one lasted 24 years. Don't think there is a real "warning" that the switch is starting to fail. Thanks.

That's the beauty of switches, they work, until they don't
