Help! Changing my oil...What to use?

Sorry if this has been covered already but Im planning to change my oil this weekend but I ran into a bump. I want to use 5W-30 like the manual says so I can get good MPG and the weather very rarely dips below 40 but my local stores only have 10W-30 and 5W-20. The 2002-2003 manuals say to use 5W-20 or if not avaliable to use 5W-30, but my 2001 manual says to use 5W30 or 10W-30. So putting all this these manuals together, it sounds like 10W-30 = 5W-30 = 5W-20.

1. So what should I use? Does that mean these grades are interchangeable in our engines?

2. Honda filters are about the same price as Mobil 1 and K&N filters. But I heard Honda filters are almost the same as Fram filters. Im planning to use Bosch filters or Pureone. I heard Pureone filters are almost Mobil 1 quality at half the price. I plan to change my full syn oil at 7500. Any suggestions?

Meh spend the extra 5 or so bucks and get a Mobil 1 over the PureOne filter... I too am curious about what viscosity to use. I was going to go with 5w-30 but after seeing this thread it makes me wonder.

Nope, they are different. If they were the same they wouldn't have different specifications

The Acura recommendation changed om the 02's and 03's because the 5w-20 is better for mileage and/or emmissions (I think)...

I use 5w-20 on a 7500 mile drain interval just like the manual says

So i should use 5W-20 on my 01 CL-S even though the manual only mentions 10W-30 and 5W-30?

5w20 is a thinner oil over 5w30 and 10w30. You will be fine with 10w30. I never use 5w20. Even though our TSX ans RSX say so. I usually get 5w30 for everything. Also u will be fine with Pure 1 filters. Also if there is a napa near buy pick up a Napa Gold Filter #1334. I am kinda anal on oil, I would not got 7500. Max I do is 6k.

im gonna use syn power too. i just bought pure ones today, buy one get one after rebate. so it was 6 dollars for 2. not bad i might say. i know the napa gold filters are good too but i couldnt pass up on this deal.

i know that 5W-20 is a thinner oil, but doesnt that mean better MPG? i mean if its ok to use in the J32A2 for 2002-2003 then why not for the 2001?

5-20 RP oil, as for filter PureOne is pretty good, but go with the Mobil 1 if you want your oil to stay cleaner longer.

They changed the oil viscosity to get better corporate fuel economy rating according to CAFE standards.

Yes I do know that Mobil 1 filters are the best but I dont plan to change my oil at 15k. I come from using Fram and OEM filters with dino oil changed at 4k with no problems so I just wanted a little more protection since Im doing a extended change.

so I guess I should use 5W-20? because I do like the fact that you get better MPG and if acura says its ok to use in the J32A2 for 02 and 03, I cant see why I cant use it in my 01. Its the same exact engine.

Go for it, and if yu wish to use the OEM filter try and avoid the cheaper filters like fram and the fram OEM filter go for the ones made by Filtech.

Theres really no sense in getting expensive oil then going cheap on the filter, its not like im telling you to spend $15-20 on an Amsoil filter or $35 for the Mugen one

How about going with Mobil 5000 dino oil the oil and expensive on the filter if you're changing the oil at 5K or less?

It's strange, but my 01's oil cap AND owner's manual say to use 5w20. Maybe they changed it mid-year . Regardless, 5w20 or 5w30 will work just fine. I've used both and never noticed an appreciable difference in mileage. BTW, I use Mobile 1 full synthetic and filters w/ 10-12K change intervals. Oil looks as clear as the day I put it in.

my oil cap also says 5W-20 but I just thought the prev. owner got a mixed up one. My manual says 10W-30 or 5W-30.

I dont think Im ever gonna buy OEM filters. They are 10 dollars each, same price as Mobil 1 and I doubt they're as good.

Hmm. Maybe I should change my syn oil at 8k then. If I was running Mobil 1 full syn oil and filter then I would def change later

Nah, I prefer synthetics for their performance difference, although if you dont mind using ordinary oil then yeah you should be able to do that for 5K I just don't like the idea of using those oils with all that extra additive packages. Some of them, including Mobil 1 EP is not even energy conserving

i use this pattern as well, but that part is a stretch of the truth in my application. after 12k its pretty dark, but never low.

Yeah, I was exaggerating a bit. My point was that the oil still looks suprisingly clean after 10K miles compared to dino oil after just 3K miles. Other than a bit of friction loss you shouldn't be low unless you've got a leaky seal somewhere and are burning oil. I never understood using Synth if your change intervals are between 3-5K miles.

My local Acura dealership sells them for about 10 dollars each.

So after this I have come to the decision of using 5W-20 in my 2001 J32A2 engine from now on. For my next oil change I will be using Valvoline SynPower with Purolator PureOne filter. And I will change it 7500 miles from now.
