HELP- car die on me for the first time

My car was running rough and idleing funny so i put it in nuetral and rev the engine, the rpm needle came back down and the car die on me. I started the car back and reved it a couple more times and the rpm needle would go to 0 and choke but not die and idle fine again. First i thought my air filter needed cleaning so i cleaned it but the problem is still there, once in a while the car will idle rough and the car will shake alittle, but no engine light. So I dont want to waste $50 for the dealer to check it out and tell me notting is wrong with my car, any help would be great and I always use 91 chevron so I dont think gas is the issue

thanks

How often do you use fuel injector cleaners? Perhaps it's time to put a bottle in.

Might be the idle air control sensor going bad.

Happens to me too. Not sure what it is but was more frequent in the winter so it hasn't happened (although my wife claims it stuttered on her recently a few times without actually shutting off).

I had/have this problem, too. I lived on the west coast for about 8 months and thought it may have been either bad gas or if the gas out there was different. The car ran fine then one day it stalled right after starting and idled pretty rough for a while. I added a fuel injector cleaner and it seemed to take care of it...but that lasted for about 3 months. Once back east, I noticed the rough idle again and put in another bottle of fuel injector cleaner and again it cleared up.

I had the throttle body cleaned about this time last year so I'm wondering if its the fuel filter or something else?

I have an appt. at the end of the month to have the dealer look at it but I'm wondering what it is that
s causing this. I've noticed several times that the car seems to be laboring more at idle--just had oil changed--which used to resolve that. I have noticed that this car is a lot like a kid with a dirty diaper. When it needs an oil change or something else it gets cranky and acts funny but once you take care of it, its like a new car all over again.....
