HELP! All 5 of my wheel studs snapped in half
HELP! All 5 of my wheel studs snapped in half
Believe it or not, all 5 of my wheel studs(where the rim mounts and the nug nuts are screwed onto) snapped while trying to change my tire. I cannot figure out WHY they snapped, but they did. At first only 2 snapped, then, a week later(after riding on only 3 lugs) today, I started to remove the rim to replace the 2 broken lugs, the remaining 3 broke. Now I am down to NO LUGS!
The reason for my message is to see if anyone has had this problem before with their 01 CL-S. The other reason is to try and get help on removing the hub where the lugs are mounted. I got as far as removing the rotor, but I cannot figure out how the HUB comes out. The only way to remove the lugs and re-install the new lugs is to remove the hub. The hub is where the axle runs trough. It also is where the rotor is mounted. It seems that the 30mm nut is all that should hold this hub on, but it does not want to budge off. The only other thing I can think of is to remove the entire arm and bearing housing and take the assy. to a machine shop to have the hub removed.
Could this hub be machine pressed and fitted? Could there be a secret E clip behind the hub?
If anyone has any suggestions or help, or even comments, please let me know ASAP. I have to be up in Orlando by thursday.
Thanks

how the hell did that happen? did you over tighten the nuts stretching the lugs? change you wheels often for the track? smack that wheel into a curb? i just don't see how that could've happened. sorry don't have any advice from you, just trying to understand how it happened.
you rode on 3 lugs for a week?!?!?!
are you just stupid? that's so unsafe!!!
The first 1 probably snapped because while removing the wheel you left it at an angle where all the pressure was only on 2 lugs. 2 lugs is not enough to handle 1/4 the weight of the car especially at an angle.
Get a HELMS manual. That'll be your best bet. However, if you can't change a flat without breaking the lugs maybe you should just take it to a mechanic and have them do it.
Sheesh

My rims are stock, I am a do-it-your selfer, and no, I am not stupid. I drive about 5 miles a week now, since I live next door to my job. Driving on 3 lugs is perfectly safe as long as your not racing or pushing the car to higher limits.
I am guessing it is time to get this HELMS manual. Where can one purchase this great source of information???

you can most likely just replace the studs...they should just press out easily w/ a hammer and a punch...use a NEW lug nut to pull in the new studs...the hub is pressed in and to remove it yoou must remove the entire spindle assy...good luck bro...also hand thread on the new lugs before stripping them!!!

3 lugs is not safe. if ur car has 5 lugs, it's possible to drive with 4 lugs in cases of emergancies, but i would never drive with 3.
The studs are not is what holding the car off the ground, it's the force that holds them against the rotor. When u turn the corner, you put tremendous amount of force on it. That's why they probably snaped

It's always the last guy who installed them if they break.
Too much torque...
Whoever did the last rotation or install needs their johnson kicked...

DAMMIT! Now I cannot even get the HUB off the car.
How do I remove the hub? I removed every bolt that is holding the assy. that the hub/rotors is mounted to!!! It won't come off.
Does anyone know how to remove this piece?

I wanted to post an update for anyone that might have this same problem or ever have this problem...
SURE ENOUGH, the spindle is pressed in to the spindle housing by machine. I broke down and ended up taking it to the shop. $166.00 WELL SPENT!!!!
DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!!! Believe me, even if you THINK your a mechanic.

congrats on fixing the wheel...
a lesson I learned after working on my friend's oil drainbolt for 1.5 hours b/c it was over tightened and WAS NOT coming out by any means without ripipng out teh oil pan with it.
if all else fails, let the dealer deal with that shit
