Question Header Sound Question

I installed my XS Power headers this weekend and it wasn't bad other than the cat bolts we had to grind off, which was made easy by just removing the whole exhaust system from the car. Anyways, the power and exhaust note are nice, but I hear a rushing of air sound (not sure if its a leak of not) when I'm driving and step in the gas. It doesn't do this when there is no load on the engine. So I redid all the connections agian last night and still sounds the same. I'm guessing its (1) of (2) things: just the normal sound of more air rushing through the whole intake and exhaust system or a gasket is leaking. I checked around the flange areas and didnt' see any exhaust deposits, but its only been a few days. Anyone thoughts on this.....

Thanks

I have the same problem. I had mine installed on Friday. From all the threads I've read on here my best guess is it's the flex piping making that sound. I read to loosen it up by twisting on it but I didn't know how much to so now that it's installed I'm guessing it needed to be flexed more. I'm pretty sure this is one of those "break-in" kind of things and eventually it'll go away once the flex pipe is stretched and twisted enough to loosen up. Other than that the only other thing I can think of is what you said, more air passing through thinner metal tubing making a pinging-hissing sound or a gasket leaking.

there was a thread about the bolts that the XS headers come w/ are too small I think they're 8mm and somebody said if you put 10mm in it stops that leaking sound. I found it at work and copy/pasted it to my home email so heres what I have if you havent seen it already.....

Replace those 8mm shitty bolts that come w/ the headers and go to the auto parts store or hardware store and pick up 6 10mm, 1.50 x 40mm bolts, 6 m10 hext nuts, 12 10mm washers to go on each side, and 6 lock washers to make it a lil easier on you when your tightening!

Hope that helps

I have Comptech Headers and I have the extra noise of air rushing, etc. I think it is just the nature of higher flowing aftermarket headers.

The noise you describe is exactly what I noticed once I installed my set of XS headers. After investigating a bit, I just think it's normal. I could not find any exhaust leaks.

BTW, I have 10 mm bolts installed on my set - I still get the whoosh sound.

No you won't.

Comptechs are the best and from what I've heard the XS ones are not too bad. I've heard that the DC headers for the CL sucks ass.

I guess its most noticable when Im driving next to walls, I figured there would be some added noise, just not that much (that isn't the great exhaust note!)....if there is anyone in the Orlando area with headers that would mind letting me hear their car...that would be great! I used the 6mm bolt, but I lined up the flanges perfectly, so it shoudlnt' matter. A 7mm, 1/4" drive socket is the excat size of the holes, so I put in one bolt, slid in the socket extension in another and used a screw driver in the third hole for perfect alignment and then tightened. I guess I will drive around for a while and see if there are any carbon build ups from an exhaust leak around any of the points of connection. If not....Its the sound they make and I will just learn to love it!!

Again, same thing here, sounds weird driving by stationary objects, but if I park the car, open the door and listen, there's no leak or odd hissing noice detected. Post an update if you hear anyone's from the outside. I'm going to see if my buddy can do a driveby for me so I can hear it first hand soon and do the same.

Get a stethoscope and run it around the entire exhaust to pinpoint a leak.

My headers have always made a "whooshing" sound while accelerating. It's normal, I've never had an exhaust leak with them.

You couldn't pay me to put DC's on a CL.

hopefully DC redesigns their headers properly to fix the problem like exellerate said they would and make em compatible with the 6speeds.

But as of right now....... DC does suck ass on our CLs

Excelerate has already talked to DC and they told him that they are redesigning the fitment for the CL

Are you guys just talking about the DC fitment issues on 6-speeds or on A/Ts too? I almost considered buying the DCs instead since I loved the DC header I had on my EP3.

They don't fit the 6spd's at all and there have been fitment issues with the AT's as well.
