Have to replace supercharge belt every few thousand miles

I have a Comptech Supercharge. I have to replace the supercharged belts every few thousand miles? My supercharge pulley seems to have different grooves than the alternator side pulley. The supercharge pulley is cutting up my belt! Does anyone have the same problem?

dang, how many miles have you put on the sc already? i didn't think comptech envisioned the need to change the belt so often.

sorry to hear that bro.

6K on supercharge. First belt I didn't know it was slipping so it when for about 4K miles. I then installed a boost gauge then I notice my 2nd belt was slipping at about 2K miles. I wasn't getting full boost as quick, especially right after gear shift. The 3rd belt 10 miles, I think I over tighten this one

Hrmm, nope, I have about 8k miles on this belt with no sign of wear. I am sure Eric, who has more miles on his blower than Comptech, has the original belt.

Is it jumping teeth at all?? My kit was shipped without a spacer behind the SC pulley. This caused a misalignment issue which forced the belt to ride up the grooves. This added load to the tighten belt which caused a premature failure of the tensioner pulley. It disintegrated on a trip back from Columbus, GA loosing the belt too somewhere on I-85.

Everything was replaced under warranty except I made my own spacer washer to fix the problem.

Wow I had no idea you have to change the belt like that. Why? How much is a belt?

You shouldn't, something is going on with his. It should last 50k+ miles or so.

You have more problems than any other vehicle. First knock, then a blown engine and now you are going through belts like crazy.....

dude...check the alignment of the pulleys vertically. When we installed one on a 99TL at work...we had to check the alignment and tension like 6 times in a row to make sure it was perfect. After setting it run it and watch the belt as u rev the engine...it should'nt be moving from side to side at all. Either that or something else is completely wrong.

The belts aren't that expensive. Keep a spare one in the trunk.

Yes, my is jumping tooth. Yes, the pulleys are align. That is why I keep tightening the belt. It seem that the supercharge pulley have a wrong pitch groove. The belt doesn't fit right on that pulley. I have a lot of belt material all around my alternator, power steering reservoir, pulley and etc. I now keep an extra belt with a 12 mm and 14 mm wrench in my car. Gates belt are about $8 ea. This is for you Scalbert. I went to the machine shop Monday, get a pulley cut to the right pitch thinking that it will solve my belt problem. Installed It on Thursday, the belt fitted perfect. Took the car out and the 3rd time I punch it, the damn belt broke right off. Stop the car in a parking lot and installed another belt, but this time I installed the belt with less tension. This time it didn't break but my boost gauge show that it is only boosting 3-4psi. I was boosting 6.5psi with the old pulley! I got home and start checking for loose vacuum hose but didn't find any. Do you or anyone have any idea where I should start checking?

Check to see if there is a spacer, like a washer, at the back of the SC pulley.

seems pretty clear you have an alignment problem. Steve is likely right about the spacer behind the SC Pulley. He's rarely wrong you know

your setting the belt at 24 foot pounds of torque?

I got 4K on my blower and I have not had a problem.

Where is ERIC??

Yes, there is a spacer or washer behind the pulley. The pulley is aligned but I noticed that the belt doesn't fit perfectly into the supercharge pulley. The belt has 4 grooves and only 2 grooves fit flush into the pulley and the other 2 are kind of on the top of the grooves. This causes my belt to have premature wear. The two grooves on the belt that didn't fit flush always wear out first.

Call Comptech to replace that defective part. There is a shim behind your alt. pulley?

Do you have the hi-boost pulley? ...because the 3-4 psi range is normal!

It seem that I am the only one that have pulley problem. I got my supercharge months before it was sold to the public. I told them about the problem but they said theirs was fine. I guess they fixed the problem without telling me. It is not an alignment problem. I will take a picture and post it on this website. Like they say a picture is worth a thousand words. Can you guys with supercharge check your belt to see if the two outside grooves are wearing more than the two inner grooves? Thanks

My belt is not wearing as you're describing. If you need a new pulley for the supercharger, rather than the alternator, South Florida Pulley has our specs and will make any size you want. If it's the alternator pully, you're best bet would be Comptech.
