Hardwiring Radar Detector

Im hardwiring my radar detect but I'm having a problem running the cord through the top vent. Does anyone know how I can do it. Are there any opening in the plastic tubing that I can fit the wire through.

In order to get a wire in the middle of my dash, I removed the pillar for the driver side, and slipped the wire behind/in the pillar, running it along the windscreen and dash. It is concealed between the windscreen and dashboard. Hope that helps-

I want to run to the fuses under the dash. I want it to be as concealed as possible. When I get pulled over I want to be able to disconnect the radar and not have to worry about the wire....

This is not necessary IMO. Most cops will see you fiddling around in the cabin. Cops don't care you're running radar detector. Usually mine continues to beep out loud, once I had to mute just to hear the cop.

For what it's worth, I mounted mine with the suction cup mounts right next to the rearview mirror. Then I tucked the power wire into the headliner, under the [plastic] driver's pillar down to the fusebox. It's kind of a pain the first time you do it but I've gotten a few under my belt already.
Not sure what kind of detector you have but my Passport w/the hard-wire kit works pretty well. Then I put the remote pushbutton through the "dash crack" near the ignition. Also, (this is obvious) make sure you tap into "switched" power so it shuts off.. There is a trick to finding the right one bc if you connect to the "wrong" one it'll boot up 2x. Minor detail tho.. it's just irritating.

Mr. , I HAD wires running to the center of my dash, but don't anymore. I had an alarm w/ antenna in the middle of dash infront of light sensor for climate control, but removed it. Sorry-

I do have a police scanner, police scanner antenna, and laser sensor on the left side of my dash, hardwired in. I might be able to get pics to you in the next week, but need some time to transfer them. Send me a PM with your e-mail, and I will do my best! Or e-mail me - grey@jhu.edu

Oh, Mr. , if you are concerned about hardwiring a radar detector, you thought of a concealed remote unit?? I have a Beltronics remote unit, with radar sensor in lower airdam, laser sensors front/rear installed for just under $500. I live in DC and drive through VA alot so having a VERY discrete unit is a must. I can also get you pics of that install if you give me some time.

greyjhu: Which scanner do you have? I'm new to the scanner hobby and recently purchased a Radio Shack Pro-91 Trunking Scanner..is this any good? I'm aware it won't pick up the new digital trunks such as my county, Montgomery County in MD but I think I can get dispatches.

AgentDSS, I have the BCT12 Uniden Beartracker. It is a dash mounted unit that is no longer produced by Uniden. I primarily got it for the Highway Patrol Alert. State Troopers when they use their radios emit some signal so other Troopers "know" how far away they are from eachother. It takes that signal, and displays the signal strength from 1-9, 9 being nearby within a few blocks, and 1 being up to 3 miles.

Other than that, I don't know much about Police Scanners. I purchased it when I was 16 about 7 years ago before I could convince my parents that a radar detector would be in (at that time) their financial interest. No piece of equipment will replace common sense and your eyes, but the Highway Patrol alert along with a good radar detector help-

Yea I've heard about that BearTracker for those repeater signals from cruisers. How well does it work in MD/DC/VA? Has it done any major saves? They have that device on eBay for good prices.

It hasn't "saved me" as much as it has "warned" me. I used to cruise up and down I-95 when I was at Hopkins coming home to DC alot. Knowing where the police turn-arounds were in conjuction with the scanner gave me more confidence to speed in certain areas. But, one limitation, the highway patrol alert does not work all the time, and I find that it works most when police are calling plates/DLs in when they have made a traffic stop (sometimes as I pass). If you want to check out my setup, just let me know! I would like to see other people's CLs-
