GS Dave vs Pow3dFX

Well, not really. We did meet up at the track, and we were going to run. But no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get eliminated from the brackets and found myself in the finals at a Pontiac event. LOL I lost in the final round on RT. I was running 14.65s all day long. It was my first time bracket racing, so I was very happy.

While I was waiting for the trophy stuff, I saw Jon hot lapping it. It looked like he got a lot of runs in, and he said he was getting quicker each time. It was his first time to the track, so I wouldn't worry much about his times. I think he was running low 15s(remember the track is 2700ft elevation, so thats mid 14s or so). Also, while the temps were great for air density(low 40s), the track was as slick as an ice skating rink!!!!

Hopefully he will post his results. BTW, the 14.65s were track PBs for me!!! Corrected for alittude puts them in the 14.18 range with 2.25+ 60 fts. Darn that traction, couldn't find it to save my arse!!

yep I should be in the 13s with my mods but I have a few things against me. I can't drive, and the Cali tracks are very slick. My PCM is also pulling timing becuase of some false knock. When I get that sorted out, I should be running consitent 13 sec times at lower elevation.

There's a guy here in NJ that comes to Etown with a black/gray GS and runs pretty consistent mid-upper 13s.

Traps...hmm I think Jons TLS was trapping 91 or so, and I was trapping 93.5-94. But like I said, he ran a lot more and was improving, maybe he did better. I think he has headers(OBX?) and CAI, and adjustable struts with springs. He didn't do any track prep, ran regular tire pressure...I don't know how to set your cars up as far as tire pressures, but he was reluctant to mess with it anyway. Very nice guy BTW. The correction factor for ET is .9679 and for MPH is 1.03.

Hey Mike, Looks like they will be doing the West Coast Gathering of W-bodies at Bakersfield, thats about as low elevation as I will go. LOL 600ft. Any lower than that andthe air pressure will collapse my lungs.

Maybe I'll make it down to C-bad someday. Its just such a long friggin drive for me. There are 2 other tracks that are closer, well 3 if you are counting the one almost next door to my house. LOL
LACR, Bakersfield, and Fontana are all within 1.5 hours. I think C-bad is 2.5 hours or more.

Dave,
It was a great experience coming down. I ran a best of 14.92 or at sea X .9679= 14.44
This was the last run i had. I got a 2.253 on the last run and a 2.252 on the second to last run!
I think with tire press. adj. or even more practice i can dip even lower with the launches.
I trapped at 92.087 or sea = 94.849

Somehow though dave i think the car wasnt runnning like it should of. Maybe the elevation was that noticeable but in general the car is pulling really well right now with a new tank of gas.
I am probably going to head out to another track after my next mod. If i have the time i will get rid of spare, and all the extra crap sitting in the car.

Dave was a cool guy too, and DAMN TALL as well. It was fun and hopefully we can run it again, head to head!

BTW next time put the fronts @ 28 psi and the rears at whatever the sidewall says is maximum. That will help with the launch and probably not hurt your mph at all.

Cool Jon, I'm glad you busted into the 14s. Pretty impressive 60 fts for your first time at the track. Those are the same sixty foots I was getting. Traction was horrible. I was near the starting lines on one of your earlier runs, and I must say, your car sounds very sweet. You can tell the motor is oh so tight!!! I think on your last runs, the track was finally starting to warm up, and that would help the 60fts. And I told you to lower the front tire pressure in the fronts and up the rears!!!! You were running it like you were on the street. Pretty cool times for that!!!

I live so close to the track, I didn't adjust my tire pressures before I left, turns out I was running street pressure too, I guess the guage I was using was all messed up. Probably wouldn't have helped on that track though, it was so slick.

I'll be running the brackets again on Feb 28th, and so far we are the only event other than test and tune. Should be less crowded.

Jon, I think with some track prep(tires and dumping the spare) you will be giving me a good run for my money. We should do it again. And we need to shame Greg Shin into coming out, he is so skeered of the Regal that he always has an excuse. "my girlfriend blah blah blah".

Oh and Jon, thanks for mentioning I'm tall rather than fat. LOL I'm only 6'2" and 235lbs. Next time I will make sure I don't make it to the finals in brackets so we can race head to head. Thanks for making the drive up. You know they do grudge nights every wednesday and friday nights, only $15 for racing from 6:00-10PM. Sometimes you can get in more than 12 runs!!!

The elevation is usually very noticable. When you lose .5 sec, that is a lot of HP!!!

Dave, here is the plan for next time:
1. Clean my intake, it needs it!
2. Oil change (its been almost 4k miles)
3. Lower pressure to about 28, i dont want lower in the front
4. Possibly stiffen rear to max, keep the front at 3/5 setting
5. If this chip goes through, get that too. If not i think i can pull some good times. Also, i will mix some higher octane fuel so i get 92 octane total. Not really for octane, but more to ensure that i am over 91 as gas stations around here are not the most reliable.
I think with the above measures i will pull close to what you are pulling. However i must admit your car is quick and it will be a challenge to beat. With the chip i think its definately possible.
BTW, there is no way your 6"2' I have friends that tall and you were much more than that. Or maybe i was just shorter than usual that day

Thanks guys, we'll definately do it again, I didn't have much time to BS with Jon and check out his TLS. And next time we will have a video camera. I hope you do run as quick as me Jon, but I will be running an open cone intake next time. While my air intake numbers are good, the volume of air is way too low. The Cone will take care of that and I expect to pick up at least .1, maybe .2. Wishful thinking, but I can hope.

no prob dave.
btw, i am going to post my exact numbers on the final run, do the same so we can compare them.
i will have the new brakes next week, and the chip whenever that gets released. i think i can achieve around what you run currently, maybe slightly better with the new stuff. i need more track time to see what i can really get.
R/T .784
60' 2.253
330' 6.327
1/8 9.627
MPH 75.136
1000' 12.413
1/4 14.923 or adjusted 14.44
MPH 92.09

btw, was i the ONLY IMPORT there?

I'll try and find the slips, my wife is putting together a racing scrapbook for me and she may have butcherd them. I remember my best run was something like this.

RT .610
60' 2.257(High 2.25s)
1/8 9.41(something like that)
1/4 14.650@93.6mph

I had three runs in the 14.65s and about 3 in the 14.71s and one oops(in practice) at 14.90(spin spin spin, I think my mph was almost 95 with a 2.5 60' lol)

I'll look for the real slips tonight and see. Oh, here is a pict of the trophy.
