Why you going to go "test it out" right now? Aren't you on a suspended license? :p

I also just got my 8500 (for $260). So far works great.
I put it in expert display mode, it can track multiple radar sources, shows you how many of each type and signal strength of each source. (no direction arrows like the V1 though)

I had a K blip, nothing, another K blip, nothing. Went slow because K (and Ka) usually means trouble. Made a turn at a light, and there the lights were, just helping a flat tire changer.
Also picked up a X'er in a shopping plaza (hiding within the automatic doors for interference), but mine showed 2 signals Found another K, but it was one of those 'your speed is...' large display machines.

So far I like it. Am thinking of hardwiring, may use an old black phone cord. (anyone know which 2 wires are power?)

Where is the best place to mount it, near the dash just over the wipers, or next to the mirror just under the tint???

fastdaddy, I ordered the direct smart cord wire from escort so I'll let you know which is which.

This morning I was holding the detector up for about 5 min and then realized that we have a hole between our seat and headrest. So i placed the detector there and just used the smart cord. Excellent place and totally concealed. I then just pushed the wire towards the seatbelt thing so the wire wasn't dangling. I then got to work found a bunch of telephone wires and couplers, So until my smart direct cord comes I'm just going to use phone wires w/ the coupler to get the ghetto hard wire. hehe

okay , here's the wiring for the smart cord.

today after work, I got two phone couplers and 2 fone cords, 1 w/ 2 cords inside and 1 w/ 4 cords inside. the one w/ 2 cords are in the middle ( 1X10101X1 ) 0 are the wires. The result, the radar detector works and has power BUT, the smart cord does not work nor does it display any power led or warning let. I then plugged in the cord w/ 4 wires, and of course it worked just fine, smart cord and radar detector.

My conclusion, the outer wires are for the smart cord and the inner 2 wires are for power. Dont know which is pos and which is neg but, hey now u only have 2 wires to guess from.

I took the smart cord apart.
The red wire is Power.
The green wire is Ground.

The black and yellow are for the smart cord. black is running to the two led's, so I assume it is putting a ground? on them, as the other green led goes to power. The yellow must control the logic for the red light and mute button.

I also tried an adapter and 4-wire phone cable, problem was my phone cable didn't reverse the wires internally, so the coupler made everything plug in backwards. The unit didn't turn on, and after re-wiring my coupler all is fine.

Looking at the sales propoganda on the web sites, is the 8500 much better over the 7500?
