Lets see, you have a beemer with a manual tranny, and you are asking tips from people with a fwd 5 speed auto. Doesn't anyone in the bmw forums take their fine auto to the track, or are they all enjoying the ac in the dealers service department's waiting room??

Just kidding
For advice, don't dump the clutch unless you want your car to sit and spin as you watch the other guy go down the track. Practice power shifting, take out anything removable to reduce weight, try to have 1/4 tank of gas of a high octane, bring a helmet (some tracks require it). Don't drive your car into the water pit to spin your tires unless you know exactly what you are doing, if your car slides, launches a bit, or you are late in staging, you will be kicked out, and street tires don't really benefit from doing this.
And have fun! I always made a day of it. I got to the track early and grabbed a parking spot by the fence, brought a cooler and lawn chairs. I enjoyed running my car and watching others go down the track, was great when an occasional pro car came and ran against a local's primered color camaro.

Launch Hard..... In that car you have to drive it like you stole it... Im not kidding you, A good launch at about 4K will give you a lot of wheel spin, but it wil also give you a great time. You need to get out of the hole high so that you catch second strong... just my 2 cents sfter running a bunch of M3's. If your tires are meaty youll have no problem, if they are a bit on the balding side dont launch as hard...

I would think that if they were on the balding side that I would want to launch hard since I would get better traction. No?

BTW...my tires are not on the balding size. Just wondering...

You wouldnt want to launch harder if they were balding becase of two reasons...

They are not slicks... the composition of even performance tires is greatly different from a drag slick. Slicks are meant to be heated because of their soft composition and need to be heated to become "tacky" since they have no tread pattern. Once heated it is like running on tires coated with fly paper. Stock tires need the tread pattern to maximize traction. If they are balding you will not have the same amount of flex within the tire pattren that actually adds to your traction ability, so once they begin balding they will yield less traction and roasting a harder composite will not only kill what tread is left on it but since its a harder compound that is not meant to retain heat and adhere to the road you will spend more time spinning w/o any benefit of traction. Hope that helps....

Chris
