Going to clear my lights this weekend. Question...
Going to clear my lights this weekend.
Went to get some silicone...
I picked up:
GE Silicone II
100% Silicone Sealant (Clear)
for Windows & Doors
will this stuff work? figured it would be better then kitchen & bath or whatever since its for outdoor use.
says it wont shrink.. permanently flexible... watertight.
has a quality scale for different materials on back, 1 to 7, 7 being highest. Its rated a 7 for Plastic (PVC,ABS,Polycarbonate)
Sound good? Is this what is typically used?

gonna do RSX & BMW lights while I'm at it too... I got a special method.
Make sure you get Hi-Temp silicon. I made the mistake of using the same stuff you got and from the heat of the motor and the hot AZ sun my lights began to separate. Now I have condensation to deal with.
I just did my girlfriends TL-S lights this week. Had to redo one side because it fogged. It only took about 30 minutes to get the lights off, but took forever to get the old silicone out. Lokks good as shit on her ABP car. Dont remember what type of silicone it was though.

honestly, if you separate the lens cleanly, you can re-use the factory silicone because they put soo much on there.....thats what we did and no fogging...the best thing to do is after you seal it back up is to tape up the back holes of the light before installing it back in...Go into the bathroom close the door and leave the shower on hot...wait for 10 minutes and if there's no fogging then you are good...
Soopa, regarding your silicone you're gonna use..... There's another type of silicone u should probably use. When I was attempting to clear one of the headlight casings we had, I noticed that the silicone Stanley used is of a GRAY.... I went to Home Depot and found some "Fire proof silicone" which was also a limestone gray. This may be better as it withstands heat better than that Silicone II.
yea i saw that silicone...
but i dont believe that is what we need.
our STOCK silicone is not heat resistent.
Our stock silicone begins to melt at around 150 degrees.
in any case, i cleared and painted a set of headlights today... gonna do another set tomorrow. this was my first attempt so i made some boo-boos on the first headlight. i believe i have it down to a science now tho

Re: Going to clear my lights this weekend. Question...
Hey man..I've done a few headlights including my own all using different types and brands of silicone. The latest being a set for the RSX. I used some silicone labeled TITANIUM something or toher and it worked great. The bond was air tight. For mine I used the Silicone II and it worked well too. So you can't go wrong with most of the brands they sell. Just make sure its silicone and not mixed with glue or whatever. Since you bought that stuff already it should do you just fine. Use it liberally.
One latest trick I tried to ease the opening of the casing was pretty useful too. Turn your oven on to about 300, then shut it off for about 5-10 minutes. Then place them in there and the casing open right up. Nothing is burnt or melted if done cautiously...and best thing you save your fingers from blow-drying and prying those motherfuckers all afternoon.
I'm sure it'll turn out great. Def post pics...or maybe take the plunge and paint the housings BLACK like in the 03's. hehee
