Getting an extra key made

I only have 1 key with my CL and I figure I should probably get a spare one just in case. I haven't yet checked with the dealership, but I'm pretty sure it's going to cost an arm and a leg there.

Searched through the forums, didn't find anything about the key itself, just a ton of threads about the remote. I did find blank keys on ebay though, with the transponder chips in them.

That one, for example. My question is, what's the cheapest and easiest way to get that key cut and programmed (and for it to work like a real key, not just one that opens the doors). Is the dealership the only way?

the dealership programmed my key for free when I bought mine from them but then again it costed me 80 dollars.

if i had to do it again, I would call them to see how much for just to cut and program then I would buy a key from ebay.

I just called my dealership, they said $45 to get it cut and programmed. I asked how much to just program if I were to buy the key elsewhere, and he said $100+ because they apparently have different types of chips in them

Damn. I'd call around and see if other dealerships will give you a better price. Call a Honda dealership. I bet it's the same as Accord and other Honda vehicles minus the logo. Bet they charge less too.

I paid next to nothing for the key. The remote was different... like $70...

Haha, that guy is funny.

Call up a Honda dealer. Most Honda dealers can order Acura parts, and Honda uses the same HDS as Acura. Theyll most likely come in a few bucks cheaper.

Yeah the remotes are expensive. I picked up one on eBay for under $25. It's in used condition but works just fine.

The techs at the dealerships around here aren't the ones making the keys, it's the guys working the parts desk. Plus the techs are back in the shop where customers aren't allowed due to insurance reasons. Doesn't seem plausible.

Yeah when I got my CL it also only came with one key + remote. The one that came with it, it looks like it's been run through a washing machine a couple times.... So I was pretty intent on getting one new
