Getting Dad's 2001 CLS for $10k...tranny problem?

Hey everyone, I'm new to the boards. My dad will be selling me is 01 CL-S to me for $10k. It has 48k miles on it now. I'm worried about the transmission problem that I've been hearing about. My dad never drives the car hard and said he never noticed anything, but I'm wondering what exactly I'd notice if I did have a bad tranny? I know I'm getting a good deal on this car so I'm not gonna turn it down. Should I take it into an Acura dealership now or do I have to wait till the tranny is blown/dead? Are there any signs that I would have a bad tranny? Thanks everyone!

if you are getting it for only 10k i'd take it b/c your cls may be covered in the warranty until 100k anyways
jump on it man, you won't regret it, as long as the tranny is covered

Hey guys, just looked thru the file cabinet, found the little document that extended the warranty. It says the tranny was manufactured in Japan...is that a good thing or a bad thing? Im definitely gonna buy it, now....what mods to start with....seems like the standard is to drop it and get bigger rims...but I really want to get a AEM CAI...

Welcome,

I think most of the trannys are made in Japan, so its not an indicator of how your tranny will perform. You can read up on the tranny issue in the forums (just do a search), EricL did a huge write-up on the cause of the issue.

As far as mods go, depends on how much you have to spend. We'll find a way to spend it

The first 2 things I would go for is the CAI and headers. Definitely most bang for your buck. And if money is an issue, you can always find a used set of headers.

Good luck!

talk abou getting owned by your dad. He's probably a member of this site. But if you do buy the car, u are covered until 100k with the tranny. I would consider getting the extended warranty as well. I'm not sure how much you drive, but I would be nervous about keeping it past 100k. And just because the transmission hasnt gone yet, doesnt mean it wont go at anytime. When I had my CL, my transmission was spent at 40k

It seems majority of the transmission failures are with Type-S models. I think the extra power is eating up the tranny. It goes to show how much margin of error Acura put in it.

Go to www.Acura.com and click on "Owners". This will take you to Acura Owners Link. Sign up and you'll be able to find out if you car has the extended transmission warranty or not. It should, but it wouldn't hurt to be sure.

Get Comptech sway bars and lowering springs. Then get an AEM CAI.

OMG...fuckin listen people. All 99-03 TL's have their trans covered until 100K...same w/ 01-03 CL's. Type S or not...it doesn't matter. YOU DO NOT NEED TO PURCHASE ANY EXTENDED WARRANTY TO GET UR TRANS COVERED...ACURA ALLREADY EXTENDED IT FOR EVERYONE SO EVERYONE DOESN'T SELL THEIR FUCKING CARS AND BUY LEXUS'S. Also I've done many more trans on premium models than I have S-Types...it doesn't matter how u drive or what u do. There's a problem w/ them all and sometimes u can be lucky and other times u won't be.

OK technically speaking not every single 03 is covered...HOWEVER we have never rejected a trans replacement because of the stupid bulletin. Everyone including Mr. Honda himself and all the reps know that their all bad so they just Goodwill the others. Trust me you'll be OK. Do u actually think that ur trans is different than other 03's..it's not and if the dealer tells u otherwise...than their lying. Not too mention every trans replacement that goets done...extends the warranty on that perticular trans too. Meaning if u have 90K on ur car and ur trans blows...the new one has a longer warranty than 100K...I'm not sure how long but it does.

A personal friend of mine who works at an acura dealer told me the story of all this happened. It turns out Acura commissioned the production of parts of the engin (tranny) out to different manufacturers due to lower costs. Well the old saying "you get what you pay for" is true. They screwed them up big time and 1 in 200 cars will have tranny problems. If the car has not had problems past 40k miles you pretty safe and as mentioned you waranty covers it anyway. Dont worry your fine.

We know that mang... we're not saying he needs an extended warranty to cover the tranny...obviously he has the 100k warranty...he even did find the letter.... What we're saying is in addition to the tranny and drivetrain, he should consider purchasing the extended warranty to cover some of the other shit. he's already at 48k miles, it will expire at 50k. Not only did my tranny fail, I had some other shit that needed warranty work...that's why he should consider purchasing the extended warranty.
