I was wondering what information you can pull up about a car based on the VIN number?

In addition to information via carfax, is there a way to find out where the car was originally purchased?

The reason for my questions:
I am in the process of buying a second car and would like to know a little more about the history of the car. Its a 04 model car so I'm hoping its not too hard to track but the car has already changed hands twice and I'm a little worried.
