Is it normal to get 285 miles to a tank? I mean I don't speed my car around, sure its' fairly new to me, and I step on it sometimes, but by no means do I floor it everywhere......

Yeah, that what I get... But I do routinely drive 80mph on the highway once I get out of stop and go traffic...

Some people have reported getting 30mpg, but my best is 26mpg (long trip up to maine and back)... I usually get in the low 20's...

I'm at 301 right now, with just over 1/4 of a tank left of 91 octane, mostly highway driving, for what it's worth.

Just filled up today at 353 miles. It averaged out to be a tad over 25mpg. I did a bit of highway driving on that tank though. I'm usually around 300 but I think the AT seems to do a bit better on fule consumption than your 6spd.

I usually get about 325-340 right when the gas light comes on. I shift around 4k in the city, and it sees redline just about every day. On the expressway though I use the cruise as often as possible and usually go about 70-75mph.

I average about 23-25mpg, dependant on how much highway driving I do.

And the 6 speed & auto are nearly identical as far as mpg goes, and with the 6 speed I'd say SHOULD get better mileage if the driver is a granny. Even though the auto OD is deeper it also saps more power, and does weigh ~ 50lbs more.

I know what you're saying and I completely agree. However, when my ex and I were together, we did an experiment. She was complaing after she bought the car about the fuel consumption. I told her it's how you drive it. She said, I doubt it. So here's what we did...

We filled up. I was to drive the exact same as I normally would, and like you said, my car sees redline almost daily and sometimes even more frquently. She was supposed to baby the car, shifting at or before 3K or so, never going any higher. The result? Me=just a little over 300; Her=280

So, she was right, it was the car, not how it had been driven.

Her's is a 6 speed and yours is an auto, right? Did you just measure miles driven or actual mpg, because not every gas level guage is going to be identical to each other.

And I'm a little confused, did you switch cars or just drive the same exact route? To really know for a fact in your situation you'd probably have to switch drivers to take that equation out. Also, 20 miles is only a difference of not even 1 mpg, so thats def within margin of error.

You are correct. She was (ex-g/f) a 6spd and I'm an AT. We didn't take the same routes but we were both doing highway driving at the time. We also did not switch cars. I just droive mine the same as I always did and she completely babied hers for that tank. We did measure the MPG and mine was 2, maybe 3 mpg higher but I can not, for the life of me, remember what the exact figures were. It was like 6 mos ago after all.

never gotten less than 450 miles to a tank before filling, and I (believe I) still hold the unofficial Acura CL record of 579 miles on one tankful of gas a couple of years ago as posted in my Jan 02, 2004 thread (which the mods have pulled for some reason ... this is all I can find of it https://acurazine.com/forums/show...5&highlight=579).

Well if you just assume that you both used the same exact amount of gas (i estimated 12 gallons) and she just got 20 miles less, then she got 1.6mpg less. The disparity in mpg between your two cars lessens as more fuel is used in the same distance traveled.

edit: And y2k you have 100% stock size tires? Even if you only had 1/2 gallon left that would mean you got 35.1mpg, which IMO seems a little hard to believe. Were you driving across Nebraska with the windows up, NO AC on, tires at 50psi, and cruise set at 55mph?

I can't believe you guys are getting such bad gas mileage. I always get over 300 miles per tank, even when I racing around town. The best I've gotten is 30 mpg, the worse was 24 mpg. Do you think it's the gas?

I'm not sure of the equasion you are using to get that figure but I can tell you I haven't hit any better than 33.somethingsomething. It was SOOOO close to 34mpg it wasn't even funny. It was a road trip to southern CO last summer. I remember saying to myself, "Damn! I should have pushed it just a bit farther to try and reach 35mpg!" I will tell you that my car does like to hit the 30 mpg mark a lot. I do a lot of 30-40 mile highway drives on a consistent basis. Usually done with the cruise set just below 80mph.

Oh, yes, I am on stock tire size. They are Falken 512's but they are stock size.

Oh, another thing that might help. In high altitude, which I am at around 6,000 ft., your car runs leaner. The air is thinner so therefore your car uses less fuel. I have noticed the reduction in power in a previous car but the fuel economy increases greatly.

You're getting alot better mileage then me, but I get stuck in stop and go traffic on the highway in the morning and nite (damn Providence, RI traffic), and drive like a screaming asshole....

When people here mention mileage by the tank full, (280,300 miles etc.) there is a HUGE fudge factor... How low do you go...

We've got a 17 gallon tank (I think), but the most I've ever put in is 14 gallons... I usually get 280 miles on 12 gallons (give or take)...

280/12=23.3333mpg (that just a guesstimate, but when I've calculated it longterm, it's 21 or 22 mpg usually).

I could get 320-350 from a tankfull, but I'd be running with the fuel light on.... I think I've seen the low fuel light come on my 2 or 3 times in 3 years of ownership.

I've got a log book where I have documented every time I've put in gas in my CLS for the last 3 years (42K miles)... I can very accurately determine the yearly, seasonally, or life to date gas mileage of the car

I have gotten 32mpg, but I normally get 25-30mpg all the time. I try to go about 400miles before I fill up just so I don't run out.

Here in New England, we get a different "winter blend" of gas.... All cars will get worst gas mileage in the winter too...

I think the CL has one of the widest variation when it comes to driving conditions. I do mostly city driving and I get about 17 mpg. But then I get on the highway and it jumps to closer to 30. Personal best was about 32 mpg. I need to move out of North Jersey.

I don't see how it's possible. You would have to drive 50 mph without accidently accelerating. The car would have to be stripped of all weight, and have every exhaust mod, without a cat and still there is no way to get 579 miles per tank. That's about 41 mpg if you count when the light comes on, and about 34 if you're talking bone dry. I call

It's unfortunate that in their infinite (finite?) wisdom the mods have chose to remove certain posts for whatever reason.

At the time, I was running 235/45/17 Dunlop SP5000s on the stock rims. I have never gotten 579 again - so I know that trip was an anomaly - but I have gotten over 530 miles out of a tank at least 4 times in 3 years. As I documented in the pulled thread, the trip was from Abilene, Texas to some city 70 miles east of Little Rock, Ark - Chevron Techron, straight Interstate (I-20 to I-30 to I-40), cruise control, 67.5 mph, 2250rpms. The year before, I was at 500 miles as I was heading into Little Rock, and even though the gas needle wasn't anywhere near the empty reading, for some reason I didn't trust what I was seeing and filled the tank. Why so far on one tank of gas? Can't explain ... just like I can't explain why sometimes I can top off the tank and then the next time I go to fill up I go to the same station using the same pump and I know I'm at least 1 - 1 1/2 gallons shy of a full tank.

I'm currently running 235/40/18 T1-S's on Servos, driving 67 miles one way to work ... no stops signs (at 4:30 am), all interstate, and the only traffic light I come across is in the parking lot at work ... and it is blinking yellow at the time. 'Normal' situation is that I am at/between 420/440 miles when the needle is at the last slash before the Empty indicator, and the low fuel light either has just come on, or hasn't come on yet. Figuring that 14 gallons is effectively the low fuel threshold in our cars, this always works out to 30+ mpg - although I have documented each/every tankful of gas I have put into the car and the mileage at the time - and I have just had the 90k service perfomed on the car. And for what it's worth, I have never owned a car that didn't exceed the manufactures highway figures. Of course, I'm not that concerned about beating the 70 year old woman in the Yugo next to me across the intersection when the light turns green either.

We get a winter blend too. It is oxegenated and yes, it will destroy your fuel milage in the winter. I think it's in there from mid Oct thru Feb or Mar. I actually saw on the news this morning that there is talk about stopping that as well as CO's yearly emissions testing. They were saying it's pointless now because all of the newer cars make so much less emissions than they used to and it's pointless. I tend to agree. It's also a very big inconvenience.

I rarely EVER see my gas light. I think I've sen it maybe 2 or 3 times since I purchased the car in March I believe it was.

On my recent trip to lake tahoe (7.5 hours) I got 425 miles to the tank. It could have gone maybe 10 more miles but I didnt want to risk it. I was surprised myself because usually around the city or even the highway when I open VTEC it wastes a lot of gas. I guess its my lead foot...

i haven't pulled 579, but i have hit 537 on a tank. tallahassee fl to naples fl. and back about 100 miles. i usually average 350 miles from fill up to gaslight

I don't understand how you people get such good gas mileage.

I don't beat the hell out of my car, but I do rip her up to redline when I get a chance (merging on the freeway, etc.)

I consistently get 250miles/tank (all city). My mom's TL-P gets the same mileage (and I don't think that car's ever hit VTEC, lol).

However, on the highway, I get 31mph on cruise control set at 75ish. Mind you, that's with the AC off.

i'm about 90% highway as well.i go to work at 6am. no traffic get off at 3 pm. no traffic. i do zoom around the city every once in a while, which kills the milage.

i got 361 this past tank from full to past the red on the E. fyi i am on a spare and didnt hit anything over 55mph the whole tank. usually i get about 300-350 on a tank though

well i have my rims sitting in my garage but i havent had the money to buy tires just yet specially during holiday season. i'm a poor college student so money comes only once in a while specially enough to buy 19" tires. well i've had the spare tire on for 400+ miles and no problems. only real problem is everybody honking at me for going 55 on the highway.

I think I got a hold of some crappy gas. I usually get anywhere from 24-26 miles per gallon driving around town, and this time I got 20 mpg. WTF?? I didn't go WOT any more than I usually do.
