G35 Race

On the way home from work today, I was driving behind a black G35. (first one I ever saw on the street). Decent looking, but nothing special IMO...

The guy was driving like a maniac... Poor car. Not good to beat on it being so young. There even was some black soot coming out of the exhaust when he floored it.

At a red light, I pulled up next to him. He revs his engine. I left it in automatic because I wasn't really in the mood to race, but I decided to him what Acura can do. Both launched pretty well. Both neck and neck (I was suprised considering they are supposed to have a lot more torque) until I hit VTEC... At that point it was over. Almost 1.5 car lengths back by the time I shut it down at ~65.

I seriously thought the G35 would have given me more of a challenge. Yes, I have headers and intake, but still....

Stock for stock, I think we are dead even with a G35 is the weather is cool outside. 6-speed, not even close.

It's not the car, it's the driver...

Don't hate the game, hate the player :-)

My next car is either going to be the G35 Coupe (6-speed) or a GTO... I definitely like Nissan/Infinity, so I didn't mean to bash the G35 in any way. I just thought it would have been a little faster with supposedly so much more torque

I haven't seen one on the road yet. How much more is it vs a CLS? I like the CLS but only have tested the 2002 TLS. My head touched the roof. The Maxima is tight in terms of headroom also. They should make the seats lower.

A comparable equipped G35 sedan will set you back a few grand more (3-4k) than the CL-S (right now at least, given the MSRP going rate for the G35).

Funny, shoofingtl at tl.com posted a G-35 kill in the IS 300 5-speed he was driving and he also said the driver was driving like a complete idiot trying to beat him.

I hope G35 does not = idiots

Maybe if he breaks in his car properly he'd be more of a challenge...

...and if you're both automatics, I doubt it's much of a driver factor (except for the brains, if he's wreaking havoc on his brand new G35 like you said).

I agree, the G35 looks good but the rear end could have been designed better. They may have more torque, but don't forget that it is RWD and loses a lot of power in the driveshaft. I already raced one, but I didn't pull on him till midway through 2nd...I had almost a car's length lead at 80, but it wasn't easy I was shifting like a madman.

I borrowed my friend's G-tech for a night to see what I was running...my best time I pulled was a 14.7, what times are you running with your mods?

I have never gone to the track, (hopefully soon, but right now just too far and don't have the time), but I also borrowed a friend's G-Tech. The best time I got was a 14.4 at 97 (the trap speed was too high). G-Tech is known to be a little liberal with the trap speeds. At the track, I guess it probably would be a 14.6. Probably about even with a 6-speed if shifted properly.

I forgot to mention it during my race story above, but the guy spun a bit at the start. That probably helped me out a little, but I'm still faster.

The G35 is fast, but I still like our engine/car better. I definitely agree about the rear... Very disappointing

Thankfully, we shouldn't have to be looking at the rear of the G35.

14.4 is damn good, I know the auto CLS is quick when modded. My 14.7 was with a 3/4 tank of gas btw...I don't plan on taking it to the track, but if I did, I'd take out the spare and jack, adjust the tire pressure, have less gas, and maybe open up the air box...then if I drove it like a rental I'm sure I could get mid to low 14's. But I'm happy with high 14's, I think that's good for a stock car.

Definitely. My cars seems to have it's good days and bad days. Sometimes it just feels stronger than others. It loves cold weather, but sometimes I just can't explain it. I know if I took my car to the track, I would probably only be at ~14.6-7 since GTEC is a little off, but you have some great times for a stock CL-S. Congrats!

Good kill!

I have yet to drive a new G35. In all honesty I LOVED the previous G20s looks. If only they would have given that car half an engine, I would have bought it. The rear of the G35 does look pretty bad, that I agree with.

On the issue of power, the Nissan/Infinit 3.5L is more apt at low and midrange. It kinda falls on its face after 5.5Krpms. I know, I own one. Almost the exact opposite powerband of hte CL/TL-S.

I would think the 14.4 @97mph would be about the right speed at the track for that time.............usually the GTech is off by about 4-5mph, so it should of said like 102mph! I wouldn't really use GTech, the only way i would use it is if my car was say stock, i take it on the best road i could find, and run it a few times to see the best time:mph i can produce.

Then after i put some mods on, go on that same road, same conditions, and run it again..........compare the two best times. I wouldn't really say well my car can run a 14.x but i would say my car runs x.xx faster in the 1/4 mile.

I actually wish I got it to say 100+, mph, but no luck. I just did it for fun.. I take no credence in those results. Until I take my car to the track, it's pretty much guessing. But I defintiely got that time using my friend's GTech....

BTW, actually had another run-in with this same G35 today... Guy races past me on the way home from work. I end up at a light next to him, and the funny thing is that he turns out to be a guy that I work with in my department. He came from England, and decided to lease the G35. (I feel bad for the person getting it after - he BEATS on it)... We pulled over and had a chat about our cars. We decided to go for another run. Raced only to 60 (traffic around) and had him about at my back bumper.

It's right about their engine dying up high. He took off nicely from the line, (smoked me) but once I hit VTEC, he started dropping back REALLY quickly. I never realized how badly they are compared to our cars in VTEC.
I have to say I like the sound and feel of our engine better. (he took me for a ride after our run).... Damn nice car though... The back actually is growing on me. G35 coupe may be an option for my next car
