So I was driving home tonight from a friends house,taking the 407 toll route when I see 3 series lights up ahead, so I catch up to him and see its a brand new m3 cabrio. So I try to get him to bite, and rev it a few times, but no dice.. Some old guy..

As we are cruising along at 20km/h over we see on the opposite side OPP busted someone for speeeding, and the old guy looks over at me and nods his head in disgust.

So we cruise along and I take my exit which he also ends up taking coincidentally (Bathurst for those who know T.O,). The roads are completely deserted because it is 1:30 in the morning.

So as we are cruising down the street as the guy pulls up to me he guns it so I do too, and mysteriously I start dissapearing..?

I was like ok, maybe he let off, but he was gunning it..

So we pull up to another stoplight and he rolls down his window and is like what you got in there.. I was like headers, intake, exhaust basically.. He was like nice.. This is brand new and they told me not to rev it too much..

I was like thats one sick looking car, and I proceeded to talk to him about the S4 I am getting, and he told me all about chips, as if I didn't know.. lol it was so jokes..

anyways the light turns green and I dont know if he is gonna race me but about 2 sec after we get moving he guns it and so do I, same result.. I guess he didn't want to harm anything, he seemed to believe every word he was told..

So finally I have to turn onto a street and I roll down the window and he gives me the thumbs up, other wise he wouldn't have seen what I was doing with the tints..

All in all one of the funnest races of my life.. I didn't expect the guy to play at all after seeing him and also his highway cruising..

The funny part is I was talking to my buddy on my cellphone earpiece at the same time, and he heard the whole thing when I had the window down..

 

Im confused, you mean the BMW M3 right? But what is the Cabrio? I thought that was VW. The new M3 are fast as hell, if his car was broken in and like he said he didn't want to push the car too hard, he would of flew past you.........i saw a brand new one at the track running mid 13's stock..........and i saw him race a supercharged type r on the way home, he smoked him.

 

"Cabrio," meaning convertible, can refer to any car. VW just happens to make a car called the Cabrio, but you'll hear of BMW/Porsche/Audi/etc cabrios as well.

I'm not surprised at all at the result. The M3 cabrio is almost 400 lbs heavier than the coupe, and the guy was understandably hesitant to rev to the hp peak at 7900. There's a reason the rev limiter moves up as the engine warms up; it's a high-strung engine and, apparently, damages easily if mistreated.

Even if it was fully broken in, a CL-S with i/h/e could credibly outrun it.

 

BMW engines are VERY tight from the factory. I've heard many people say that they don't losen up until the first couple of thousand miles. Keep in mind that the clutch is new as well.

However, even a fully modded CLS wouldn't be close to the current gen m3. Drivetrain loss puts us at a severe disadvantage. Moreover the cabrio is still low 5 second 0-60 and we aren't even close that. It might be closer but we will still get killed.

Guys I have raced a real M3 not the convertible and it pulled away nicely, not as hard as I expected..

Once I was VTECing I was really moving but I am sure he just didn't rev it up all the way he could, because he sorta gave up everytime and cruised up when i let off

 

No no, it screamed for a while, just not the redline i am sure

 

So a normal M3 ran it hard and got mid 13s.. so if I am a low 14, and this one is the convertible, wouldn't it make sense for me to pull away if he was driving close to its full potential?

 

Totally stock E46 M3...13.08 in the 1/4.

Naw sorry that thing is a beast even as convertable It even quicker in the 1/4 mile. Considering the m3 is z06 territory as far as performance so the CLS has a LONG way to go

 

These cars should DEFINITELY not be judged on only 1/4 mile times (both M3 and CL-S). Both have most of their power in the upper RPM range and really shine at high speeds. Even though this particular M3 was a convertible, I am sorry to say I doubt that a CL-S with your stated mods could keep up with it. I know that a modded S4 has a lot of trouble keeping up with it as well. But congrats on a fun race.

 

i hate the whole "mag racing" thing so take it for what its worth but motor trend just did a test with M and AMG cars in their April edition, and the Convt. M3 ran a 13.63. (the AMG CLK55 ran a 13.74). I havent seen anyone run below a 14 with a CL-S, sorry but I dont see you or anyone on this board beating am ///M anything (00-pres)

IF you guys read the post carefully it said he was not revving it up all the way..

I know and I will admit to getting beaten by an M3..
There is no denying its ability, but in this particular race I won because of the circumstances...

I posted this not to brag about beating an m3 in a real all out race, it was more to write about the fun I had..

 

A guy I work with got a new M3 Convertible last fall. He had a 97 M3 that he sold to his little brother. When his new M3 was finally broken in, he raced his brother. He was disappointed to find out that his new M3 was about dead even with his old M3. I remember a magazine article where the M3 convertible went 0-60 in 5.5 .. about what an older M3 could pull. I am not trying to be a mag racer here, but I can definitely see how a heavily modified CL-S could keep up with a M3 Convt. if not driver very hard. A Cl-S would never beat a M3, but the convertible is quite a bit slower than the coupe.

I have driven in the guys enough times. It doesn't feel THAT fast... And BTW, the new M3 has a HORRIBLE engine note. Sounds like a can of nails being shaken. Don't get me wrong though. I would get one in a heartbeat if I could afford it

 

Once again, much like 1/4 mile times, 0-60 times means nothing for this car. The majority of it's power is in the higher RPM band. Once again, I will use my S4 analogy only cause it is what I know. An S4 chipped runs 0-60 often in the Sub 5 second range and will pull even with a M3 off the line. Sometimes faster due to AWD. but on a long haul, the M3 WILL catch and PASS. Now, the CL-S is the same, as is most or all VTEC cars. If you were to shift at 4,000 RPM's in a new manual CL-S, how many cars would you really beat? Not many. You have to let your car wind through the upper RPMs to get that power. The very same goes for the M3, only on a different level.

I would think a Chipped S4 can beat a M3 Cabrio, but maybe not
