I've never seen or heard of a battery exploding before. Was there any damage to the car itself?

The acid went all over the place, but no damage. A little baking soda and then a rinse with the hose. It did NOT happen while jump starting another car!!!! This is what happened when he tried to start the car!! Thanks for your replies.

Did you connect positive to positive, and negative to negative? You know you're not supposed to do that, right?

Actually is pos. to pos. and negative to car chasis or engine block. But the main mistake was that the car I was helping had a bad alternator and the battery was good prior to cranking. secondly the negative was connected to the negative on the supposingly bad battery and that cause a spark casuing the explosion of the battery.
