Engine ticking noise
Engine ticking noise
I have found some earlier references to this issue, but have not seen real answers, or maybe I missed them. I have a 2003 6-speed with 6k miles. Recently I began to notice a ticking noise from the engine when the car was idling. I can give it a little gas, and the ticking stays constant - no change in RPMs (the ticking). I recently had the car serviced, and asked the dealer to check the noise. They claimed everything was in spec, and suggested the noise might be from fuel injectors.
Does this sound familiar or make sense? Anything I should be concerned about?

Ticking
If its NOT changing with RPM's.. its not the lifters nor the injectors. There is a solenoid that's bolted to the driver-side by the strut-asembly. This is an emissions thingy that ticks away every now and then... make sure its not that.
How about ticking sound that apears under rear driver's side wheel? Its near muffler area... someone told me that its a fuel pump pumping gas, cause sound disapears when I press gas... but then it comes back up... ( I figured fuel can flow on its on sometimes ).
Its a constant ticking with the same frequency

The fuel-pump is in the back of the car (in the trunk). The only time you hear the fuel-pump is when you first turn the ignition to ON (without starting the car) and it turns on to pressurize the system and then shuts off. The ticking sound near the driver-side wheel is either the EVAP purse solenoid (which I mentioned earlier) or some other emissions-related solenoid. It's difficult to pinpoint every little sound because the more you start listening to them... the more different sounds you hear!!

The sound only begins when car idles for some time, I tired pressing accelerator pedal little bit, and ticking was gone... than in 30 seconds it came back.....
I thought the fuel pump is supposed to work when your car idles and that's the noise I am hearing??
I will show it to the dealer than, cause someone told me its my fuel pump pumping gas while car is idling....

I have the same ticking noise, just started yesterday. 2003 cls 6 speed (1k miles). I found the cause of it. It's in the engine bay located between the brake fluid reservoir and the clutch reservoir. It's a vaccum solenoid that connects to the charcoal canister which is used for emmisions controls. Something about venting pressure. You can actually feal it pulsing when you touch it.
The noise is really anoying and can be heard fairly loudly from the inside of the car. I took it to the dealer and they said they would check it out. Run diagnostics on it.

Just figured it was normal.
Ticking
I do have another 'ticking' sound that does change with the RPMS... but its not the lifter or the valves or anything as I can only hear it when INSIDE the car... too much noise in the engine-bay to hear it with the hood open. I need to check all the belts. Unbelievable... 5K miles and all this shit!
Had dealer check mine out a week or two ago when I went in for my 1st oil change....told me the sound is normal and was coming from the vacuum solenoid....ticking can be heard inside the car, somewhere on the driver's side behind the driving wheel (in the hood somewhere)....told me not to worry about it...normal noise.
