the true potential of an A4....

After seeing the other thread about the different stages of chipping, the power loss % due to the quattro system, etc and the fact that i really like the build quality and look of the audi a4 and couldnt afford an S4...what is the true potential of an A4???

to me, an extra 5-10% loss of power at the ground due to the quattro is a good trade-off, the better traction, handling with a AWD system is worth it to me to lose an extra few HP at the ground, but people are making the point that even a car like a corolla or a tiburon or a base civic will tear up on a A4 with the 1.8T....is all that true?? is the 1.8T THAT SLOW???? now i understand distancing the 3.0 from the 1.8 and it makes sense but what is the true potential of these 1.8T engines??? how much money does it cost to make a 1.8T as fast as a 3.0 A4?? and what about modding the 3.0?? can you get alot of juice out of that 3.0 liter motor without too much money??? is it more cost effective to just get the 1.8T and spend the money on the chip, fuel injectors, etc??? or is the 1.8 so slow that you might as well at least start from the level of the 3.0??? 170 at the crank is a pretty low number and quite a significant drop when comparing a CL-S with headers. obviously the A4 will handle much much better and probably be more fun to drive around in but i dont think i could be happy in a car THAT slow anymore. so back on point, what is the potential of these 1.8T or the 3.0 audi engines??? and how much does it cost to get one of those motors really cookin?????

a b5 (previous model a4) upgraded to stage 3 (k4 or t28 turbo upgrade, plumming, exhaust and chip can put out well over 300 hp at the wheels). The engine is amazing and handle gobs of power. The a4 is a nice car and their engine has been nominated for best in the world several times. THe problem is with the STOCK A4 not a modified one. A STAGE 3 a4 will have more power than u'll ever need. However, if u wanna play u gotta pay. the upgrade will void ur wty on the turbo and drive train and will set u back 5K which isn't bad for the type of power ur getting. The tuned car is still supposed to be fairly reliable(I.E motor or turbo won't blow as long as u cool it down after driving). Audis are nice cars it's just that at this point in my life i need the security of a wty.

The 1.8T can make more power (and weighs less) than a stock 3.0 for $1000 (900 on sale now) Stage 1+.

There will probably be a SC for the 3.0.

a4 is like the CLS. Costs too much money to make it go fast.

My buddy has a 2000 5MT quattro A4 1.8T and just ordered his stage 3 turbo upgrade from APR (t25 turbo). When all is said and done he should be running in the mid-high 13s...as long as he doesn't break anything (he is trying to do the install with a friend). As far as I know the A4 1.8Ts have some good potential. Don't know much about the 3.0s but I guess you can supercharge those but not sure about their potential.

Zapata, it does cost money but unlike the CLS it has plenty of aftermarket support. There are at least 3-4 companies that make turbo upgrades for Audis (Milltek, APR, PES) and a few others that make chips for their ECUs. Fastest CLS is probably what 13.5 (zootking or fastvtec) whereas the fastest A4 is in the 12s (heavily modded though).

But I agree that both are expensive to mod.

I agree with ferizzo. The support out there is amazing. The CLS has none. In addition, most cars at this price range cost money to make it go fast anyways.

I've been burned in my S4 by a modded a4 many times.

the biggest difference between the cl-s and a4 is the build quality!!!

after owning the car for a while....i really am in NO rush to chip it...

go test drive the 1.8t manual, if u are this interested u will get it.

warranty wise, APR has hidden chips, undetectable. Go make friends with your service manager and your set.

as for modding, every car over 30k will be pricey to mod....what u need to look at is value.

I think its actually less expensive to mod a A4, the A4 chip+fuel injectors is 900 dollars and gives you like 50hp and almost 100lbs of torque @ wheels, what cl-s mod will do anything close to that for that price?

and if u like bodykits, there are about 5 or 6 to choose from
