Engine Issue, Need Advice.

I went to start the car today and heard a noise. Before you get all wacky on me... no not the roar of the engine, something else. When I turn the key two positions forward I hear what is like a buzzing noise almost like a motor is being held from operating or turning, then it goes off. I located the noise as being from a small motor like object in the center of the car from passanger to drivers side, and directly behind the cover to the engine. It seems to vibrate loudly. There are no sparks, unusual heating etc. I can't even see that there is an effect as of late. (No it's not the ABS this is before you start and I don't remember it from before) I do have the V-Tech kick in appropriately and I notgice no loss of power. Can anyone take a guess at this? I'm in Jersey for the weekend and would be willing for a nearby brother CL-S owner to have a look. Thanks

This is FAQ: "ABS Built-in Self test Buzzing noise"

You are hearing the ABS running a Built-in Self test, (or calibration test). It happens twice at 5mph and 18?? MPH.

This is a Normal behavior for the CL-S.

Wish it was but it's not. I know the ABS noise (more of two hums) and that should go on while you are moving. This happens just when the key is turned to the position just before start. Definately a buzz like the actuator on a motor isn't turning.

If in doubt just take to the dealer immediately. If you afraid from driving the car, call Acura TLC and they would give you a free towin to the nearest dealer.

The object you are describing is the electric motor that moves the doors inside the intake plenum it is possible that this device is making a small noise at engine startup.I have not heard any of them make noise nor have I had any complaints about it so it may require attention from your dealer.Jens

When I turn the key to the 2 position, it does it's self check or diagnostic test and I always hear a little hummy noise and then it goes away when the maintenance indicator turns off. I'm not sure if this is the noise you are referring to. The same thing happens to my bro's and my gf's accords.

My guess would be that the fuel pump is priming. This is almost a standard on EFI cars. It probably runs for about 2 seconds and then cuts off??

This is normal almost all new cars should do this. The fuel pump cuts on to pressurize the fuel supply system. I normally don't start the car till it has run; you typically get quicker starts (subjective idea, you wait for it to prime which adds time to starting??)

OK I went to Springfield Acura and had a look and listen to a new S. The problem is the motor behind the engine. When I turn the key it sounds like gears may be striped or something. I unpluged the motor (easy just press and pull) and there was no sound. What does this motor do? Acura can't have a look until tuesday. There is a cable that runs into a grove attatched to the motor. Now... I turn the engine on and runs fine. I lift the hood and lean over and move the cable by hand and find no change. What should be happening?

Like Scalbert said, I believe it is the fuel pump. Every car with EFI that I have been in does this.

haha that ABS checking thingie scared the shit out of me when i first bought my car, cuz my old avalon never did that before.
i think cl-s's engine is not as quiet. it always makes different kind of noises, i m just ignoring all of them.

That motor is part of the mechanism for VTEC operation in your car.Part of your VTEC system involves the rocker arms switching over to the high lift lobes on the cams, the other part is this motor you describe that changes the flow of air thru the intake manifold.I assume you compared the motor on your car to another similar car?The car should run without it but it being disconnected may cause the check engine light to come on.Jens
