Engine Damper (installed)

Here it is, first engine damper or torque rod for AV6 and can be done same way on CL-S to eliminate engine movement.

I purchase this Universal Engine Torque Damper (172MM-186MM) for $49 a week ago that comes in 3 colors of your choice red, blue, silver and had it installed yesterday.
.

This is Universal kit requires welding on brackets, however I went with other choice . Custom steel bracket was made to replace the stock left strut bar then it was painted glossy black and installed. The other end was installed on Power Steering pump as seen on the below pics.

BTW, the bracket was made for $100 (cut, drilled, cleaned and painted) not cheap but made per order, so for $149 I've got myself a perfect torque damper that works. In fact ebay sells car specific (not available for J-series) but for the same price.
Result is great... car planted even more along with polyurethane filled motor/tranny mounts and no engine movement observed any longer .

Pics time:

I purchased from this guy. You'd need 172-186mm (6.77 - 7.33 inch)version, ask him. The bracket was made in my local shop.

any risk of that think yanking your power steering pump off or out of place? or doing some kind of damage after having it on for a couple years?

hmm pretty cool Serge... I will have to research the "power steering pump area" that you mounted to... I would not want any unwanted stress on the power steering pump so I will look into it....

that bracket off of the strut tower does not look hard to reproduce.

Nope. It sits secure on the block and you have to have tons or torque to rip that PW. I believe the shop used longer bolt (same diameter) on the pump I can double-check .

Hey Smitty,

Where they mount it, is the pivot point used to loosen up the PW pump when you needed it to adjust. The pump sits on 2 bolts secured on the block but they're not used.
And yes the shop used longer bolt (same diameter) and said there won't be THAT much power to cause any issue

I can if there is enough demand, but I was thinking more of the bracket production for AV6 since universal kits can be purchased on ebay.

So, just sharing the idea and will report back once my car tuned with upcoming EU (E-Manage Ultimate) with PnP harness, so I can get on it at WOT to see the response . One thing for sure is I gained LOW-END torque and this engine damper should serve well.

VERY interesting, i love these type of mods but would not go through the hassle of finding someone local to fabricate that bracket, i know i could, but i know they would charge me way more than 100, so if this is going to be produced, count me as a def, if you have the bracket then it looks like an easy DIY

Go to your local well known machine shop. They'd probably do it for under $60. I got a custom fabricated FPR adapter which had a 1/8 NPT tap on the side, 6AN on one end, and pipe thread on the other for only $60. So a little metal brace like this should be relatively cheap considering. Some shops charge a minimum of 1 hour work, but for something simple like this, I'm sure they'll crap it out for you.

Sounds like a cool deal, does this add any excessive noise/vibration to the ride? Would it be worthwhile for a NA setup?

No vibration or noise. It would be good for both NA or FI.

Nice mod On the 6-speed you can just replace the front vibration dampener with this thing... it will even look stock!

02AV6, did you get your bracket done at Garage Kwai? I remembered Benson Wong was working on your car when he convinced me to get the supercharger

Yep at Kwai, and your only concern with blower should be auto tragic, unless you opt for Dr. Evil custom

Here is a visual example for those who concern about ripping the PS pump. It won't happen

Look under this anchor (black bracket). That's where the bolt goes in that keeps this damper secure in place along with PS pump. That black bracket bolts up on the block and there is no way you can tore it apart. The PS pump sits on two other screws which are not used for this damper and there is enough clearance for PS pulley.

Just curious, but isn't the engine suppose to be free to move or vibrate within the limits of the mounts? Won't dampening the vibration (movement) cause stress to the engine case/components?

You cannot see pics since acurazine removes the "other" board domain name. I guess there is an issue with it's policy. I'm going to sign up a new web hosting later on today and link the pics.

Also, planning to compile a video (before/after) asap so you'll see how torque damper REALLY works by eliminating any engine movement under full load on a dyno.

I sent an e-mail to ingalls to try to get one made but it looks like you have the same part. I would rather us put it together for cheap than pay ingalls the $340 they want fro what appears to be the same fing part. cant wait to see the pics. will it bolt right on to the 6 speed?

I just came across this thread....I had too google this to find out what the point was....so I figured I'd post my findings.

How it works and what it does.

An engine dampener is a small shock absorber that mounts between the engine and the chassis. It reduces engine movement and dampens its motion providing a number of benefits:

--- Improved off-the-line acceleration
--- Reduced wheel hop
--- Improved vehicle stability
--- Reduced shock load on driveline components
--- Smoother shifting
--- Reduced wear on exhaust system joints

And now I have two questions:

1. Is it noticable on a stock (or almost stock) CL-S?

2. Are there any major risks?
