Engine Damper (installed)
Engine Damper (installed)
Here it is, first engine damper or torque rod for AV6
and can be done same way on CL-S to eliminate engine movement.
I purchase this Universal Engine Torque Damper (172MM-186MM) for $49 a week ago that comes in 3 colors of your choice red, blue, silver and had it installed yesterday.
.
This is Universal kit requires welding on brackets, however I went with other choice
. Custom steel bracket was made to replace the stock left strut bar then it was painted glossy black and installed. The other end was installed on Power Steering pump as seen on the below pics.
BTW, the bracket was made for $100 (cut, drilled, cleaned and painted) not cheap but made per order, so for $149 I've got myself a perfect torque damper that works. In fact ebay sells car specific (not available for J-series) but for the same price.
Result is great... car planted even more along with polyurethane filled motor/tranny mounts and no engine movement observed any longer
.

hmm pretty cool Serge... I will have to research the "power steering pump area" that you mounted to... I would not want any unwanted stress on the power steering pump so I will look into it....
that bracket off of the strut tower does not look hard to reproduce.

Hey Smitty,
Where they mount it, is the pivot point used to loosen up the PW pump when you needed it to adjust. The pump sits on 2 bolts secured on the block but they're not used.
And yes the shop used longer bolt (same diameter) and said there won't be THAT much power to cause any issue

So, just sharing the idea and will report back once my car tuned with upcoming EU (E-Manage Ultimate) with PnP harness, so I can get on it at WOT to see the response
. One thing for sure is I gained LOW-END torque
and this engine damper should serve well.

VERY interesting, i love these type of mods but would not go through the hassle of finding someone local to fabricate that bracket, i know i could, but i know they would charge me way more than 100, so if this is going to be produced, count me as a def, if you have the bracket then it looks like an easy DIY

On the 6-speed you can just replace the front vibration dampener with this thing... it will even look stock!
, good luck with everything.
Here is a visual example for those who concern about ripping the PS pump. It won't happen
Look under this anchor (black bracket). That's where the bolt goes in that keeps this damper secure in place along with PS pump. That black bracket bolts up on the block and there is no way you can tore it apart. The PS pump sits on two other screws which are not used for this damper and there is enough clearance for PS pulley.

at least he said he wants to do it and has a real question. he coulda just said "wow cool idea" like most of the noobs.
yall need to stop bashing these noobs so much.
You cannot see pics since acurazine removes the "other" board domain name. I guess there is an issue with it's policy. I'm going to sign up a new web hosting later on today and link the pics.
Also, planning to compile a video (before/after) asap so you'll see how torque damper REALLY works by eliminating any engine movement under full load on a dyno.

I sent an e-mail to ingalls to try to get one made but it looks like you have the same part. I would rather us put it together for cheap than pay ingalls the $340 they want fro what appears to be the same fing part. cant wait to see the pics. will it bolt right on to the 6 speed?

02AV6,
will you please let me see pics of the install. your link to the part is dead. where and by who is that part made. Will you provide dimensions for the custom parts. I want to do this. where are the pics bro

I just came across this thread....I had too google this to find out what the point was....so I figured I'd post my findings.
How it works and what it does.
An engine dampener is a small shock absorber that mounts between the engine and the chassis. It reduces engine movement and dampens its motion providing a number of benefits:
--- Improved off-the-line acceleration
--- Reduced wheel hop
--- Improved vehicle stability
--- Reduced shock load on driveline components
--- Smoother shifting
--- Reduced wear on exhaust system joints
