Does the headers increase the MPH at the top of 3rd?

I noted that now flooring it in 3rd... I approacd 95 MPH and still hvae like 1000 rpms to go... So I guess now I can redline 3rd at 105+ MPH...

Anyone noted that? Does headers improve speed at the same rpm at the top of the 3rd?

mph in third? I'm thinking that headers like any other performance part would only change how fast your engine finished 3rd ... MPH has to do with the ratio between engine/tranny/wheels... nothing to do with the hp of the engine... I'm thinking that at X RPMs in X gear that the car will always run at the same speed in MPH...

I thoight the same, but I think I see 3-digit speed very quick now... so now I am only at the track I can note the difference.. I mean at the drag is the only place that I top 3rd at 7100rpms and shift to 4th!

More HP does add more MPH. The general rule is you gain about 1 MPH for every 10-12 HP gained across the entire RPM band. If you are just peaking 10 HP at the end of your RPM band you will most likely not gain 1 MPH, however if you gain 10 HP over a more consistant range like (4500 to 6900 RPM) you will gain about 1 MPH.

Add weight and wind-resistance to that formula... gets a tad more complicated!

If I remember Helms manual spec 103-113 for top of the 3rd...I guess the 18" would affect that...

1st 0 to 35-40ish mph
2nd 40-70 mph
3rd 70-115 mph
4th 115-150
5th 150

isn't yours the same thing?

I think I was topping my 3rd around 105 on the drag... no way it was never close to 115!

Nope....Your gearing hasnt changed so speed in gears is the same.

Max is on the money. With more HP you just get to the MPH faster. You still shift at the same MPH

DeezNutz' 2 Cents for the Day...

I've definitely been over 110 in 3rd a few times (always under safe driving conditions of course), and agree with the fellows who say that HP does NOT increase the speed in a gear--it's all linked together the same, so you'll just get there faster.

Have you changed the tires / rims while you were doing headers? A different size tire or rim will change your effective gear ratio and could account for some difference indicated on the speedo and tach.

Horsepower will never change your mph or rpms at any given point - that's controlled by the combined ratios of the tranny, differential and tire / rim combo..

Mine goes to 115 too.

If anyone has a Type S that doesn't do that, then it should be taken to the dealership, cuz something is definitely wrong.

can you show any research that has matched this claim? MPH is purely based on diameter of wheel/tire, gearing, and RPM from what I know... I'd like to have correct information so correct me if I'm wrong...

If you're talking about TOP SPEED, that's completely different.... but in 3rd gear, at 105 or 115 MPH or whatever, our car is nowhere near the top speed.... What's stopping us there is the rev limiter.

There is a direct connection between the engine crank, the transmission, and the wheels.... The only thing that affects car speed at the redline is: the engine RPM, the gear you're in, and the radius of your wheels/tires.

Seems some people think adding HP gives you better top speed in each gear.

If you have two similar cars with the same wheels, transmission, tires, differential gearing and redline limit. Even if one has 1000hp and the other 260. Both will have the same max. speeds in each gear...

period. Modifying the engine doesn't change the gearing...

Now it could be possible the 260hp doesnt have enough power to max out the last gear because of wind resistance.

The things that affect top speed in a given gear are maximum RPM and effective gearing (gear ratio, final drive ratio and OD of the tire). Power has nothing to do with it.
