does the ecu have a back-up?

i was wondering if the ecu had some sort of a back up. if i were to clear the ecu, would it reset and be clear of what the car's setup was before? and also, canthe ecu or engine record the mileage as well as the odometer, or is the odometer the only way to tell the mileage? i have a 01 cls

The odometer only records the mileage, but I don't see why you need to know this.

The ECU cannot be reflashed so to answer your question....

What shinybluecls is referring to is performed by disconnecting the negative battery cable or removing the ECU fuse.
