Do I need to warm up my car in winter??

I was wondering if it is necessary to warm up CLS when it is cold, lets say little bellow freezing mark....
Manual says that it is not necessary, but I still let my car idle during the winter for 1-2 minutes before I drive it

The only advise I have reard concerning this is to not WOT the car for several minutes after starting up in cold weather. I would consider a 1/2 to 1 minute in idle a reasonable policy (like during the time you're scraping the windshield.

i get up in the morning, turn the car on, lock the doors, then go back in the house and get ready, letting it run for like 10-20 mins. I never thought letting the car run at idle can hurt the car I've sat inside the car at idle for a few hours before also...

I don't think it hurts the car, I imagine sitting in the car for hours is no different than being stack in traffic.... Well, ofcuouse its better not to idle the car for long time cause your engine is getting worn out.... but so does it when u drive or stack in traffic ....

Just cost pollution, money and a little extra wear on the engine.

Agreed,

Ideally, you can warm up the car in about 3-5 minutes... 20 minutes is just excessive. :P

Besides is usually less than 20mins. HaHa, oh this one time, me and my gf got home at like 5am Sat, for some reason, I dindt realize I left the engine running and she didnt either, we both went in the house and didnt come out till 8pm to go to dinner. THats a good 15 hours of leaving the car out running

That is the really nice part of keeping the cars in a garage. They stay semi-warm even with 20 degree ambient temperature.

If semi-warm is 30 degrees, then sure.

Mine's in the garage but I still warm it up for about 30 seconds in the garage, then back it out for another minute or so of warmup on the driveway. Then I go easy on her until the temp guage says she's warmed up.

That's the key - go easy until the temp guage is pointing to normal operating temperature.

I guess that is relative to what someone finds cold... The coldest I have seen my garage is about 50 dergrees F.

But very true, wait for the gauge to come up before getting on it!!

I usually sit for a minute or two when it's cold, then take off. The car warms up very quickly, which is impressive, but I agree that drag racing in February 5 minutes after starting the car is probably not a good idea.

I fire her up and turn the seat warmers up then watch the rpm fall below 1000k. When its cold it usually holds around 1100~1300 and starts to fall when it gets warm. then just keep it easy till about temp is almost to middle.

Hey idiot, the older models of cars required warm up due to the carburators, newer models do not require warm up because they got fuel injection, and manual states that "no warm up is necessary", however, many people debate on this issue.
You stupid fuk.

30 sec-1minute before moving is plenty, esp. if you're using synthetic. Then I just ease it out and keep the rpm down till the temp gets in the norm range. CL does warm fast; my 96 Max was much slower to get to operating temperature. I think that anything over a minute in warmup is unnecessary.

Man,

15 Hours running?? That's insane? Kinda Weird, but how do you not realize to shut the engine off?? You're lucky you didn't leave it in an attached garage.... you would be looking at Carbom Monoxide galore!

Depends on the length of your trip and outside temp

If you are going to drive for a while (lets say 15-20 min at least) then warming up fuel injected cars is really not necessary. What kills the engine the most is the short trips, so lets say if you going to the local store and you will get there before the car warms up then its best to actually warm it up a bit before take off.

Just pay close attention to your temp gauge, and dont get on it until the car warms up. I usually stay under 3k RMP until the car fully warms up. Also, it really depends how cold it is outside. On colder mornings, it might be best to let it run a bit (up to 5 minutes) and then go ahead.

haha well first off, we had a few drinks, it was late and she started doing stuff already on the way home, so my mind was too busy thinking should we do it in the kitchen or jacuzzi or the pool or just do it in bed again, etc. When we parked she was already kinda laying on,, well its hard to explain. It was just one of those moments.
