According to the Acura website, the 03 CL-S's had Xenon HID's. Is this true? The car I looked at did not appear to have them, only projector beams.

speaking of xenons... how do i make them get the purplish hue??? stock cls have a more whiter apperance.
on my eclipse i bought aftermarket hid's, they were purple.

if anyone knows get at me...

4100K is the stock temp for our HID bulbs. the higher temp you go, the bluer it gets. Philips makes 5800K and 6000K bulbs that are bluer. some aftermarket HID bulbs produce 8000K and look violet or light purple. Our HID bulb size is D2R, but D2S uses the same bulb. D2R bulbs have a shield on the bulb to prevent glare for low beam. D2S are meant for projectors and don't have a shield, but they are the exact same bulb as the D2R.

Note: K=Kelvin

Keep in mind, the higher kelvin you go, the shorter the life span of your ballasts and you greatly reduce the output of your lighting. I've written about this numerous times, automobile lighting is my blind-specialty .

u are correct the high beams are normal 9005 bulbs.

ok but if the car is under warranty... and i "left the stock bulbs on " and the ballast were ruined... wouldn't it be cover because i "left the stock bulbs" on?

The ballast wouldn't be ruined if you left the stock bulbs on. They are designed to handle it. The dealer will definitely be able to tell if the bulb is stock or not.

I know what you're saying, but that sounds like too much of a risk.

What are you gonna do if everything is perfect until you have 110K miles on the car? I'm sure it's gonna cost a lot to replace it.

ok so you want to put a bulb in to get the bluish/purple color, lose some light output in the process and risk the chance of the ballast blowing out because it's not designed for it?

I agree. If you want that blue/purple look buy an Audi.

It's not worth losing the light output for a different color.

Yeah they have projector headlights which disperse the light in a way that makes it look that color when the car is coming at you.

Their light output is still high though.

A 1st gen guy actually put projectors on his CL.

Being legal I think is the issue...PIAA makes off road, non-street legal bulbs too so keep that in mind when you get your cars annual inspection. Some places let a lot slide so ask around. In MA there are strict rules about the hight of your headlights. I only have a CT drop but the gave me heat just to let me know that they were going to "let me" get a sticker anyway. The b@ll buster is, it was another modder that just "had" to tell me to cover their butt. All I had for after market bulbs was PIAA high beams and those were legal.

bixenon technology is actually not something technical at all. its just one xenon bulb with a mechanical shutter that moves a reflector from one position to another via electrical signals (left stalk).

now. otoh, they have come up with new xenon lights that increase visibility depending on lighting situation, dark road vs. city streets. those we will not see on cars for a few year.

you might have to go some tint shops or aftermarket shops and ask around cause I'm sure they will know places where the inspectors let you slide.

do u guys replace your xenon light bulbs after 1 or 2 years. if i get new bulbs would they shine brighter than the older ones? or do they stay the same?

here simplified version answers:


all stock (INCLUDE PROJECTOR, Bi-xeon, audi, bmw) are 43k which is yellowish white color. some of the cars with projectors, the light seems to change color that is because of the projector NOT the bulbs.


Projector HID use D2S (the type of bulb) bulb which has 4300k(Stock) 6000k (purpleish white), 7000k(7.5k) blueish white. 8000k (more blue than white), 10000k BLUE
Reflector HID (CLS) use D2R bulbs. the color and K are the same as D2S bulbs.

Higher K doesnt mean you will see better. It might be brighter if u look at ur car from outside but when you sit inside the car 4300k (Stock) is the best for visibility. because the higher the K is the more blue it gets. 4300k-5500k is the closest color to our normal sunlight which is the best for visibility.

Projector (D2S) and Reflector (D2R) are exchangeable with minor modifications. For example. You might notice at night (inside the car) the CLS HID has a cut off line. but when u put D2S Projector bulbs in, you will not see the cut offline anymore (u can see the top of your house)

The color of HID bulbs will become more yellow as years pass by. and HID bulbs usually as 4-5 times longer than regular bulbs. if you dont like the color of ur HID bulbs, all u need is change the bulb, not the entire assembly.

as far as i know my whole lighting setup is stock, yet it is a very distinct purple light, not an aftermarket purple, i've seen these on many TLs and CLs, i'm not sure why everyone else has white/yellow lights :\

there is no good or bad answer. 6k is acutally ok. u will barely notice any difference (visibility)except for the color but u WILL notice a big visibility difference if u put 7k especialy 10000k.

who said 6k will shorten the life of the ballasts? i dont think it would. all of the HID bulbs regardless what K all use less power than regular bulbs.

did u buy the car used or new? if it is used then the previous owner might have changed it. If you bought it new then i have no idea, maybe it is just your imagination. FYI when u first turn on ur HID the color is blue/purple ish but after about 10-15 secs when it is fully charged, the color of ur stock HID will become yellowish white.

Why is it that it starts up all bluish looking tight, and then becomes more white? I don't understand the whole "warming up" process? Can you explain?
