Directions for Painting Engine Cover
Hi All,
I hope this message finds everyone well during this holiday season. I normally don't post much on the forum as I am not the most tech/mechanical savy member but I am an avid reader and have learned a lot from the information provided by the fellow members.
So here is my question...I want to be adventerous (for me) and I have decided to paint my engine cover, battery cover and the front plastic part that surrounds the hood latch. I have searched the forum and have gotten a general idea on what materials to use and the basic procedure but for some as unhands-on as I am, I was hoping to get specific list of ordered instuctions on what to do. I know it sounds silly but I have never painted anything in my life so I have no idea how many coats of his to use, when to sand that, etc. Please help.
Materials I have purchased:
Simple Green to clean the plastic parts
600/1000/1500/2000 Grit Sand Paper/ Scotch Pads
Dupli-Color Sandable Primer
Bulldog Adhesion Promoter
Dupli-Color High Heat Silver Engine Paint
Dupli-Color Engine Enamel (clear Coat)
I figure I will pretty much use the materials in that order but from other threads I have read that some people use the adhesion promotor and people use a different number of coats for each of the different sprays (primer, paint, clear coat). As well, the Primer says that it is sandable...do I sand the plastic before or after I prime the peices or both?
Any insight would be greatly appreciated...can't wait to take on this mod and post some pics.

I just gave mine to a shop to paint.
That way I could always complain if I did not like it.
I dont know what they used or what they did not but , I have had it for 3yrs now and it is just know starting to gradually almost peel off.
Paid $100 for this.

It looks like you got everything down, what color do you plan on painting it?
I just did the engine cover , the body color paint (SSM) and I think it turned out great, one day I will go ahead and complete the rest of the engine bay, here are some pics:

Good luck with the project!

Just wanted to update this thread with the new pictures of the painted engine componments...thanks to everyone who helped me with this project. If anyone is ever searching this thread at a later time and has any questions about painting their engine covers, etc., feel free to contact me.

I miss mine. CL-S is nicer (although the SHO seats were nicer leather and adjusted more) but nothing can beat the sound of the SHO intake noise under full throttle. Once I got the supercharger it was fun eating Corvettes on the highway. Nothing like a +450HP 4-door. I really wish the CL-S responded so well to the supercharger. I'd be all over one if it did.

Still miss that car. Great gas milage, tons of fun to drive, and comfortable.
Had my 2nd Gen for a couple years. Hit a deer less then a week after I got it and put $7k in damage in the front end. Uncle use to do autobody stuff and helped me fix it for less then $500 including a color matched hood I had shipped to me. Then the tranny went. Shipped it to a builder in Ohio that fucked me 5 times before I said thats enough and took legal action. Had it rebuild here with a shift kit and it was awesome. Supercharged and it was a blast. Then rear ended my girlfriend at the time.

on the comfort, best riding car ever.
That it was. REALLY wish we had adjustable side bolsters like the SHO does. Had Eibachs in it which made the ride a little more stiff but not harsh and I'd still do 7 hour drives with no issues. Cornered great. Previous owner was a Ford master tech's wife (total MILF). Had plates that said SHOGIRL.

She was really hot. She cried when she sold it to me and gave me a hug. Made me promise to take care of it. They only got rid of it because her brother had given them a Jetta he had won. She worked at the department of vehicle services so transfer, tax, title and license was only $99.
Also came with winter mats and snow tires. That's what turned me to summer and winter tires. Will never go back.
The paint has to be High heat Tolerable.
They have high temp paint and elements u could hard to ur paint to increase its heat tolerance. I think pretty much any color u want , can be mixed up for u.

I've been wanting paint my cover also. What color do you guys think would look nice with an Anthracite CL-S?? I dont want to color match it since the exterior is kind of a dark color and the plastic is black. It wouldnt make much of a difference.

I wish we had a nice looking intake to powdercoat. Hate that everyone is going to these stupid intake covers.
