Diff between VTEC and i-VTEC

As subject says, what's the diff? If i-VTEC is the newer version of VTEC, why doesn't the 03CL have it?

The difference is that an i-VTEC motor can change its valve timing in addition to lift and duration. Normal VTEC only changes lift and duration of the valves. Being able to advance and retard timing is vital to extracting even more power out of a motor and keep its daily drivability.

They will. Every acura engine will have ivtec by 2005. Next gen cl in 2004 should have ivtec. '03 NSX is rumoured to be a ivtec 4.0L v8 or possibly an ivtec 3.5L v6.

I thought I read also that i-VTEC gives you more bottom end torque? Is that true? Is this also one of the reasons that the RSX Type-S has such a quick 0-60 time. . .

I doubt 300 pounds from a 3.5 liter but for sure 265 pounds. Torque is hard to make because it is much dependant on engine displacement. You can make all the power in the world by making it spin faster, but torque will go up marginally.

I am sure you know what I mean.

I heard that the new i-vtec is not that great for modding and if i-vtec is compared with vtec, vtec is better.

The I-VTEC would be helped with DOHC. Variable timing with SOHC is "tricky".

A lot of the "race" folks remove the I-VTEC and the tighter the gearing (gear ratios), the less need there is for it.

In "everyday" situations, where emissions are very important, it is very helpful to keep the torque up, while allowing the overlap and duration of the cams to be used to gain torque (and power) and to control "quenching" and exhaust dilution that can help with N0x control.

I don't think there is any question the next engine will be the 3.5L i-VTEC with 300hp since it already exists............in the Honda Dualnote.

I will be happy guy trading my CLS for a 2004 TL-S with 300HP/300lbft . Just give me 4WD. otherwise, torque steer and wheel spin will spoil the fun.
