Dealership is replacing headlights due to condensation -- question inside...

Under Michigan law (I'm pretty sure it's the same in most other states, as well), you're entitled to your original parts.

So I'm thinking when the dealership replaces my headlights, I should ask for the original housing back, and clear out the corners. And I can keep the new set for later.

Has anybody done this? What do you think?

Question for you,

how many miles do you have?
are you within basic warranty?

reason I ask is because I have 37k miles and both lights have water/condensation in them. I was hoping the dealer would replace. Waddya think?

Sorry I couldn't answer your question thogh, hopefully someone knows.

thanks

If they are charging you for the repairs, yes you are certainly entitled to the original parts. But if it's a warranty repair, they are not required to give them to you.

I have just over 15k miles and since my car is an '03, yes, that puts my car under the warranty coverage (4-years/50,000-miles).

Headlights (except for bulbs) are covered under the bumper-to-bumper coverage, which is 4-years/50,000-miles. You should take it in and see what they say.

Good luck.

I had a feeling that's how it is. Thanks, NSX.

Just to add on to what NSXNEXT was saying, according to my service writer, the dealer is required to send back the defective part to Honda/Acura when replaced under warranty. Could be BS - don't know.

I think you have been mislead. The law states that if anything on your car that needs to be replaced you are entitled to factory parts to have it replaced with. Basiclly keeps dealerships from installing "lower quality" replacement parts to save some money

No, it's correct. But it just doesn't apply to warranty work. Now if I got in an accident and had to have the headlights replaced, then I'm entitled to those busted headlights, which are pretty much useless.
