Want a cookie or something?

G35c would be a good choice, although the interior falls short a little bit.

M3 would be cool, too.

Both of those have rear seats he could use if need be.

I would say a Vette, but there's a new one coming out. It would work both ways. If your dad gets a used one, he could get it cheaper now. Or if he wants the new one, then he would pay full MSRP, not to mention it's a first year model and would have problems.

Used BMW 5-series, maybe?

Hell, it sounds like he's already made up his mind.

What's the difference between a Porsche and a porcupine?

With a porcupine, the pricks are on the outside

The 96-98 Porsche 993 have a little more hp then the 95 993. Also the 95's and early 96's (IIRC) have an engine wiring harness problem. Porsche will replace for free, but if he's going to get one of those make sure the harness has been swapped.

The 95's have tire wear issues on the rears, but that can surposably be fixed by using the aliment specs for the 96-98 cars.

Watch out for the dreaded CEL (check engine light) problem as this requires an expensive top end rebuild.

The 95's have come down in price as of late, but they have retained alot of value over the years. I've seen 95's in the low $30K range, but like everything else, you get what you pay for, so spending a little extra for a low mile well cared for car (with maintenance documentation) is worth a few bucks IMHO.

I'm usually surfing pelican parts 911 forum, but rennlist.org has a better (the best) 993 forum:

http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforum...?s=&forumid=58

I was actually thinking about buying a 993 when I was shopping for a new car, but I decide to be practical and bought my CLS instead. Ahh... one day I'll own a 911 (probably a 72,73 or a 87-89) a weekend only car.

either that or S2000. as far as performance a 3.0 Z4 runs pretty even with a S2000(stock to stock). I'm in Ohio Valley Region SCCA Solo2 autocross. they brought out a s2000 bone stock with maybe 4-5 k on it. and a BMW with the SMG(clutchless shift) they ran almost twin times. Personally I like the BMW Z4 because that SMG is a pretty sweet set up.
plus i like the style of the Z4. it looks pretty phat

If I had $45k to spend on a car I'd get a 1994 911 3.6 Turbo or a 1993 RS America. If he wants a Porsche he should get one. $45k will buy a nice one.
Greenmonster, I've been on the Pelican board since 2000 I think. I was really looking to get a 911 when I had my Prelude. Almost got one but ended up getting an Audi and then going back to an Acura.

The 964's are becoming quite a bargin, eh ??

I've been on pelican since July 2001. I almost bought a 67 912, but it was a little too rusted for my liking.

I'm looking at getting a 911 in the next couple of years. I'll be 40 in 2 1/2 years, so I think the timing is right for a "mid life crisis" type vehicle

I'm tempted to check out this one even tho' I don't have room in the garage yet for it. It's about 5 miles away from me, so it's probably worth at least checking out.
