Custom exhaust for my CLS 6MT
Here is something else that may keep you guys interested. We built this exhaust system for my car with a TIG welder and a MIG welder I own. We used a Magnaflow 4” round resonator and 2.5” piping throughout. This setup is probably best for a car with every bolt on and certainly ideal for a car with a supercharger. You could easily do 3" all the way if you like. I ordered the Y-pipe from Mandrel Bending Solutions. They custom made it for me for about $100. The CAT in the front is the universal Random Technology high flow cat. The flanges can be had at any exhaust shop or ordered from AutoZone etc. I lightly sanded and then used acetone to clean the assembly. Then I spray painted the whole thing with 2000 degree header paint after to make it all look stock. It sounds great and looks awesome. I will be replacing the stock mufflers with some Magnaflow's next week sometime, or the next. Might go for the Quad tip look. If someone wants one made send me a PM.

The car pulled noticeably harder in all gears when Naturally aspirated…Especially on the interstate at low RPM's. I drove it naturally aspirated with the exhaust for about three weeks before I put the blower on.

Cool.
The reason I ask is that CT-Engineering claims that on the CL a cat-back exhaust produces almost no more horsepower than an axle-back.
At least that's the case on their product line.
Do you think it's the RT Cat that's providing the improved performance?

A good example would be where Scalbert made 350whp with his 9psi intercooled comptech supercharger and full stock exhaust. When he added the cutout(exhaust dump valve) bofore the cat his HP jumped to ~370+whp with it open. What that says to me is that removing more back pressure adds power.
It is possible and likely that using this exhaust on a Naturally aspirated car may offer negligable gains but with the RT 300cell race cat(not to be confused with the bolt on cat Excelerate is selling, thats more of a factory replacement) and the 2.5 inch piping there is no denying that there are gains from 5-15whp and some torque. I have not personally looked at the CT CAT back. Once you add the supercharger on top of my setup, I would expect to see a ~10-20whp gain over the stock exhaust if you are making 6psi or more boost similar to Scalberts results. There have been a few members that have made there own 2.5" and 3" custom exhaust recently who have seen 10-15WHP gains over stock. It all boils town to design.
There is also a guy on the board who put a CLS6MT motor into a civic and installed a 3" single tip exhaust and is making 267whp at the wheels with no CAT and a custom tune on a stand alone ECU with a mostly stock engine, not even headers(he did not have power steering though). So it all boils down to what level your engine mods are at and what your tuning capabilities are.

Yeah I know and it looks great. Just think if you start at the engine and go from there to reduce restriction you'll see bigger gains. Of course, that CT header was like $1,300.

I just experienced the same effect. My freshly replaced motor on the 6MT with lightened fly, lightened pulleys and test pipe installed at the same time lost ALOT down low. I drove it around for about 120 miles. My CT Axlebacks arrived and I bolted them up and it gained noticeable power back in the lower revs. I'm cooking up a 2.5 stainless exhaust myself....

I dont buy what CT told you and I have heard that many times. CT made many awesome products but they are not the Almighty in all respects. Some of their products looked alot better than they functioned although most all of them are very well built. Look at all the $1200 headers for the S2000 that are made by very reputable companies but dont add any power, some lost power. Just and example.

I'm always keeping my eyes open because I want to put in a modified cat-back.
This might serve my needs.
Any changes in the exhaust note?
I'm assuming a little deeper going from 2.25" to 2.5"

I will get something up that is relevant soon. All in identical conditions. I am going to do the stock sound, then the catback with stock muffler sound, then the cat back with no mufflers and custom straight pipes in place of the mufflers, then the cat back with Magnaflow mufflers. I just ordered the new stuff so it will be a few days.
