Coworker picked up his WRX yesterday...race worthy?

So he got the manual tranny and the thing is pretty sweet... It is the blue one like in all the ads. Has anyone had the chance to tango with one of these 4-cylinder turbo beasts?

What do you think the outcome would be on a drag? I should have my CAI by the end of next week... He still needs to break-in for probably another month or so.

those commercials are really cool, makes me want to go get one. 227 Horsepower, Someone find the weight on the car. Seems pretty small so maybe its light? btw Acura commercials suck. There the most boring ones on TV. Daewoo has cooler ones

I bet it will take a CL-S.

If it actually sounded as good as the one in the commercial, and actually had 276hp like the WRX STi does in Japan (and hopefully will come to America in a couple years) it'd be worth buying.

He said his car weighs 3085 pounds in the sedan... He also said that people are running 14.3 1/4 mile bone stock... They have posted their time slips and he is looking for them.

did you read the fine prints???

in order to get 6.2 you have to drop the clutch at 4000~4500. and most people who just got a car isn't stupid enough to do that. and most people who race on streets don't drop the clutch at 4000 or 4500 either.

It should be a pretty close race tho, just don't go on twisty roads.

I am pretty sure that the CLS will lose to the WRX. My mag racer experience notes that C$D has posted 5.8 secs for the 0-60mph and another mag even did 5.4 secs! with very low 14s on the 1/4 mile. So...I would expect to lose unless he cant shift.

you can try racing him from a rolling start. he's gonna hand you your ass from a standing start. i'm seen them lurking around trying to lure people in but i'm not that naive.

Give it a try, it would be a good race.
Get some mods like a cai and exhaust, it would give the Wrx a pretty good run.

My friend ordered one and is waiting for shipment in May.

However, I don't think that we could win. Those things are just too fast.

For those of you who complain that the front is ugly (and it is....stock), don't forget that there is huge aftermarket support for this car. I've already seen several different headlights and grills I like that make the car look different, and totally sweeter.....

do it for fun, not for money. unless he's a bad driver and misses a shift, i'm pretty sure the WRX will kick cl-s ass up and down the drag strip and then even more so in the twisties...and yeah...it is kinda fugly, but i like the look...some after market ones look pretty decent too

Don't forget, you guys paid only a little bit more and got yourself a 'luxury' & 'performance' car. Subaru has no name in the luxury market, Acura does! Your Acuras are much better cars! If you want to talk about just performance we can even say that a POS $15k used Mustang Cobra can take out your CLS and my M3, but its not just about 0-60 or 1/4 mile.

You're right, Subaru has no name in that market. Their "Limited" edition cars are nice, but really don't compare. They are fun to drive though! I leased an Outback for my wife and for kid hauling and off-roading, it can't be beat. I like the WRX because it looks like it can get down and dirty and smoke you while it's doing it.

Now that was a great post Are we all happy and freindly again ?

In regard to the WRX....

Very fast little car !! It has great speed off of the line and up to about 70MPH. These things are aesthitically .... different ... but they are little bug-eyed rockets. They do lose power in the upper end as you can see by the trap times of ~93-96MPH that they make all of their time gains in the low end and start to die down as they get into the upper speed brackets. In a street race to ~60 MPH they will most definately leave a stock CL-S behind. Even in a top speed shoot out it the CLS would pull a bit from ~70-110 on the WRX but even then it would be a tight race. If you throw in some turns and bends ...well it wouldnt be too pretty going at it from a Stock -vs- Stock comparison... But for the money its a tight, fast, car ... def. worth the pennies if you want something with a little mod can hang with the big boys in a street race...........

Two things about that run I don't understand.
1) He dropped the clutch at 6000rpm to run a 14.3@93.55mph. Isn't that clutch suicide or what?

2) How does he have such a low ET with a lower speed. The driver in the other lane had a 14.4@101mph. That's an 8mph difference.

Davo:

I dont know what was in that lane next to hime but it pulled a lot stronger the last 1/8. The WRX here crossed the 1/8th in 9.16 @ 74.83?MPH where whomever he ran against did it in 9.55 @ 79.4?MPH ... odd numbers alright, but it may have been a larger displacement engine, different gearing, poor/slow shifting of the other car making higher speeds but resulting a slower time in the race....

M3Sins,

I was dead even with a Cobra 0-85 when I was stock. I'm mildly modified, and haven't lost to a Cobra yet. Please note I've only raced 2. You guys give those rustangs too much credit!

Dropping the clutch at that rpm is the ideal thing for AWD. My friend actually pumps his up to 6500rpm...that's where his stage limiter is set on his MSD...and goes!!! He pulls consistent 1.7 60' times...I think that Subaru isn't telling you everything though....he must have a custom exhuast, and at least a boost controller...I find it hard to believe that at 3000 lbs...he can pull that hard stock..with only..I use the term loosely 227 hp..Eclipses were 2900 lbs. and had 200hp in Gen 1 form and pulled only high 14s....are you saying that 27 hp is the difference between high 14s and a very low 14?

Hey all, I am ash's coworker w the WRX. As far as those times go that is THE lowest time we have seen out of a stock rex, as far as comparing it to the eclipse it could be somthing as simple as gearing or where the power came in to get that difference. The average time seems to be about 14.5 ish. And yes, moonmaster, you are completly correct in saying that is a typical launch RPM for an AWD car, not that one should do it all the time by any means but the car will hold up to doing it very occasionally.
thanks,
Nate

I raced one, and it was a good driver and I really like the car. It was the first person and driver that looked like they knew what they were doing. I could pull up the rear of the thing at speed, but it is more nimble around tight curves.

I could sit on his ass in the turns that I know by heart...

I would consider getting one for my wife as a 2nd have a sh*tload of fun car!

I have a few friends that own a variety of Subarus, and they all love them and have had minimal problems with them.

A loaded Subaru WRX (no auto it's another $1000) is in the $26,000 range.

I bet it will take a CL-S.

If it actually sounded as good as the one in the commercial, and actually had 276hp like the WRX STi does in Japan (and hopefully will come to America in a couple years) it'd be worth buying.

i saw a silver one on the street without that sport package ( BODYKIT AND RIMS)
looks nasty from the front to the end.. looks like a cheap civic =)
But i bet the blue one with the sport package will look much better
i personally like the looks of the older version.
