Correct Oil Filter

Hi All,

The Acura dealer, Acura of Milford, Connecticut, sold me an oil filter that I am suspicious of. They said it was smaller than the original but was still the correct part. The part number is Honda 15400-PLM-A02. The gasket looks to be the same size as the original part but the case is about one third smaller. Is this really the right part for an 03 CLS? Thanks for the advice.

Yes, all new Honda filters are tiny. I personally use a Wix 51334.

why even bother with Honda oil filters, just go with Mobil 1 or other top line after market filter.

I can't imagine Honda/Acura engineers downgrading the quality of their oil filter. One thing my service tech begged me do is to use Honda filters even if I had it seviced elsewhere. I suspect that despite their size they do a better job than the old ones.

I got a filter for my 03 CL at the dealer recently and its pretty small. I think its the same one as the Civic. I'll have to check part numbers next time because the Honda one is a couple bucks less.

The new design is a bit smaller but it's correct.

It is way better than any aftermarket oil filter out there.....
.... the tech that told you to use these filters over aftermarket was very, very right 'LouisN'.

the oil filter studies show otherwise, Honda filters made in US are made by FARM, and they suck.
Mobil 1 is better than OEM.
whatever dealer says means nothing, they always recommend genuine Honda parts... something they are told to do...

Made by =! same as

Lots of manufacturers make things for other people to their specs which can be better or worse than what they sell under their own name. And not all Fram filters are shit, just the cheap ones.

Depends on who did the study, a lot of them are bought and paid for by the manufacturer....particularly magazine tests.

Another reason to use OEM filters is there can be no warranty hassle.

search oil filter study's on the net or here,, not one of them have good things to say about Honda filters,, right now, mobil1, amsoil and a few others test out far ahead (by analysis not marketing hype)

warranty claims are based on the dealer proving the filter caused a failure,, when asked if they did this they will just fix the car ( a lot cheaper than dealing with costomers informed about fed laws)

You are going to have to tell me where this "study" is. All I could find was some guy who cut some filters apart.

If they can show it was not maintained according to the instructions in the owners manual they are off the hook. Using an "unapproved" filter may cause a problem if you have an oil related failure.

It depends on who the study was funded by. As long as its a name brand filter. An oil filter is an oil filter is an oil filter. Next time you change your oil count the metal particles in your oil, that will tell you LOL gimme a break.

these sources are pretty athentic. when you cut the filter, you can see how stuff is really made.
Mobil 1 like many other after market filters is good for our car, and you can be using this filter.
I've been using this filter since my first oil change, and my engine runs perfect. at around 50K mile. some member here have been using M1 much longer.

Are you saying you've been using the same filter for almost 50k miles or you've been using Mobil 1 filters since the first change?

Since I bought this car in 2000 I've been changing my oil with Mobil 1 synthetic oil and M1 oil filter, every 6,000 or 6 month.
I've done a lot of research, and Mobil 1 syn. oil and filter are dffinatly top of the list.... same goes for Amsoil....
their products are expensive, the last thing they want is for someone to have oil related problems due to their specific filter or oil.

Well congrats on going 50k miles on M1 oil and filters. I've gone almost 60k on dino juice and OEM filters. My engine still runs perfect too. What does either case prove? Nothing.

You need an oil analysis test with each and everyother oil change. That will prove the true value of brand A vs brand B.

My previous car, I trusted Mobil 1 & Wix. My Acura is treated with Royal Purple & Wix. Wix has always treated me good

btw...
