Comptech Flywheel... its NOT Comptech's fault

Okay.

I think I jumped the gun a bit...

The reason for all this mess is really my fault. You need a special tool (like someone mentioned on the other post...) and I was unaware of the importance of this during the install and removal of the pressure-plate.

If there are any long-term issues with the clutch/flywheel, I don't know about it yet.

Comptech has obviously been very nice about the whole thing in explaining what the situation is.

I just hope I didn't mislead anyone here... but in the end I have to summarize the root cause and effect.

I hear ya man, I've done it before too...
Good to acknowledge who's at fault.

Hopefully CT will continue to lend you a hand getting it fixed even thought the problem is really yours.

With their good support I'm sure they won't bail on you.

Sorry, but there is plenty of sheep on here. I'm sure some of them wandered to their own pasture... Just my on some of the folks here...

Good luck with it!

Well... with providing info and possibly locating a pressure-plate (as its on National Back Order). Obviously not in any other way... I mean it is my fault now - not a product issue!

So basically... this is not really a do-it-yourself kind of job!! The 'special tools' are very expensive too.

I hate it when you learn in this manner and once again, I am sorry that this has occured. But it is nice to know what the final reason are. In the end some good will come out of it; I now will not attempt this myself...

I don't want to make that recommendation... as I don't know what the long-term effects are... if any!

Probably because they have not had to replace them yet, so none to be found in the coffers -- they have to go back to the manufacturer.

Allmotor,
What have you heard about the backorder? Im still waiting on mine, and i have a theory that i wont be able to prove until i see my invoice with the replacement part numbers. My car has been in the shop for 8 days and probably will be for a few more weeks. I got a pimp ass cavalier loaner though. :ghey:

Man that's a bummer. Never seen anything like that for clutch replacement. I wonder if there are any other cars that have this type of pressure plate. Might be a comercially available tool if there is. Looks like you could use a flat piece of steel with some long bolts to compress the pressure plate if you had the Honda alignment tool. I was seriously considering doing this mod myself. Hopefully this stuff will become more readily available as time goes on. The Accord 6-speed is using the same trans so Honda should be making more parts.

Did the CT instructions show that you needed to use the tool?

Nothing at all against allmotor, but there is hardly a difference between accidentally burning up a clutch and not following directions for an install, both had the same outcome, both are abuse. done and done.

Wow, I didn't know we ever actually needed the special tools :o! That sucks because that will be an expensive install too . The flywheel went from the top of my list, to off the list, to back on my list but way at the bottom What are we looking at a $1200 mod now?

Ha, your looking at 999.00 for the package and then 8 hours LABOR for the install at the dealership... More like a $1800.00 mod.

But there are ways around it... it is just a matter of time before I get the tool and start passing it around to you guys...:P

Sounds like a plan. I would be willing to rent it when I decide to take that plunge. Also if you look at it in the service manual it looks pretty simple. I think I could put together something that would work using parts from my Hub Shark wheel bearing puller.

Comptech has no instructions nor any special tool requirement - that wasn't very well communicated before-hand.

I suppose they assume you follow the service-manual... well, oops!

I am getting the flywheel refinished... would anybody be interested in it for 60% of the price? The clutch has 1000 miles... and the flywheel has some nicks on it... but the important part of the CPS pickup will be machined.

You should keep it if you like it. You solved the problem and you have to re-assemble it anyhow why not keep it?

I know how you feel though. I had the wrong pressure plate for my Audi when I was doing the clutch and the trans would not go all the way on. I finally figured out the pressure plate was hitting the bell housing so I started on it with a grinder. Well the housing was pretty thin and before I knew it I was looking at the ring gear for the front diff. and the oil was running out. THat special tool just looks like a simple press I'm sure there is something that could work.

I can relate to getting tired of messing with something though. That's why I bought a new car. Now here I am thinking about dropping the trans in this car. I'll probably wait a while on the flywheel though.

GOOD LORD I have always done all the work on my cars myself and am not about to shell out that much money. I mean it's really not that hard...
