Clunk when going from P-R?

Does anyone else have this problem when going from Park to Reverse? This happens in my moms TL. I dont think it is a tranny issue cause it is driving fine. Is it normal because my CL does that sometimes as well.

are you on a hill when this happens, mine will do that but only if i am on an incline of some sort. Feels like the weight of the car is resting on the gears, so you have to give it some force. But I have seen this in many other cars as well.

when parking: press the brake, put the car in Park (still holding the brake), pull the ebrake, let go of the brake.

when leaving: press the brake, release ebrake, put in gear and go.

sounds pretty retarded, but that will solve clunking issues.

i got you, so you don't let it roll that little bit when you take your foot off of the brake and let it rest on that gear. makes sense.

Correct... even the slightest bit of roll while shifting will cause that clunking sound....

The sound actually comes from loading the gears with some of the weight from the car. All cars are engineered to withstand these pressures.

However, it is good practice to not load the tranny with any weight while the car is not running.

The instrucitons above will solve your problem.

Also, when parking on an incline:

While stopped, and while depressing the brakes, place the transmission to the Neutral position "N". Depress the parking brake firmly. Test the parking brake engagement pressure by slowly lifting off the brake pedal. If the car moves slightly, you must apply additional pressure to the parking brake. If the car does not roll slightly, you have enough pressure to leave the parking brake as is.

Continue by lifting completely from the brake pedal. Place the transmission to the park "P" position, and you are set.

As a rule, always apply more parking brake pressure than necessary (better safe than sorry).

I hate that clunking noise too.

If you have the same noise under various other situations, PM me and I can assist.

My cars transmission does not clunk now!

well said, let the car rest on the ebrake before you get into park.

Mine tranny made a huge clunk sound when putting it into reverse with my foot on the brake on a incline, and then i went to drive on flat surface and put it into reverse and it made the same noise not as bad. It hasnt made the noise since but freaked me out.

It's normal. My TL has done that from day one (100K and still on original tranny).

Once the trans fluid warms up the clunk is not as pronounced.
