Are the CL tranny's unreliable?

Are the CL tranny's unreliable?
I keep reading about many people with Tranny replacements, dead tranny's ,waht the heck is going on here? I've had my car for almost a year, but almost never drive it ( ~3000 miles) because of mass transit, Is this something htat happens after a certain amount of miles? do they fix it right?

Depends on who you talk to. I have almost 20k miles w/o a problem on my car. There will be problems w/every car esp after a redesign. The tranny does seem to be a problem for some members but the majority of members are not having tranny problems.

Take that statistic as you will.

However, I would wager that the majority of people here
are Type S owners, and of those owners I would wager that the majority of them are car enthusiasts who drive and/or mod their car harder than your average person.
My point is basically that yes, some people have had tranny problems, but certainly not a large fraction.

Let's say we have 500 accounts on here that are either not active (people getting banned and creating a new name), not CL/TL-S owners, or otherwise defunct. So that brings it down to 2,000. Out of those 38 had bad transmissions. So like our second grade teachers taught us 38 / 2,000 is 0.019. So about two percent of the transmissions failed. Anyone have stasistics fore GM trannys? How about Chrysler? You want a crappy tranny, get a Chrysler. In other words there is nothing wrong with the transmissions. I'm sure I'll get flamed for saying this since some of our more 'vocal' members have tranny failuers and have a temper towards me. But that's the fact.

It's obvious that the CLS's have a transmission problem. That is evident from the national backlog to get a new transmission. There should not be 30 plus day wait to get a transmission for a 2001. The backlog only seems to be growing as more CL's are dropping by the week. I'm on day 45 of my wait for a new transmission. Even if the failure rate is 1% or .5 percent, that is still a signficant failure rate, especially for an Acura.
And if you listen to most Acura reps, they'll tell you in one breath there isn't a problem with CL transmissions, but in the next breath, they tell you it will be a four to six week wait for a new tranny.

How do you know thats a significant failure rate? What is the rate on other makes and models?

Hey, if you can come up with more accurate statistics, by all means do so, and I will happily place it in the FAQ. It's a bit amusing that davematthew's "YES" is ok by your book, but my numbers require a snide remark.

Everyone is so defensive about their cars. I was just asking because I'm concnered whether or not it's gonna happen to me. I'd like to be preventitive and do anything I can to avoid replacing my transmission.

If the tranny is defective, it'll go regardless.
If it's good but you drive hard, it'll go faster than if you don't drive hard.
So basically, drive like you normally drive.
