CL is NOT DEAD nor will it die!!!!

Straight from the horses mouth!!!!! BOOOOYA!!!!!

http://waw.wardsauto.com/ar/auto_product/index.htm

There are no plans to take anything from the lineup. The TL is refreshed for ‘03 and CL gains an optional 6-speed manual. “Reports of its demise are greatly exaggerated,” says an Acura spokesman.

Katherine Zachary

Ward's Auto World, Aug 1, 2002

Honda Motor Co. Ltd.'s Acura luxury division plans to add another sedan to its lineup for the ‘04 model year, Ward's has learned.

Based on the smaller European Accord, it will be marketed under the TL, Acura's lower-luxury sedan. A 4-cyl. engine, tuned similar to that in the RSX sport coupe, will power the new luxury performance sedan.

Built in Japan, the sedan will fill a void in Acura's model range. The Integra had come in both 2- and 4-door variants, but the RSX, which replaced it this year, comes only as a coupe.

Acura has weathered economic conditions on strong RSX and MDX SUV sales. But its sedans — the TL, RL, and CL — have not met internal expectations.

At 32,072 units for the year's first half, TL sales are down 11.1% year-on-year, while RL sales of 4,538 have fallen 13.7% from like-2001 and CL sales of 6,808 units mark a 32.4% decline.

There are no plans to take anything from the lineup. The TL is refreshed for ‘03 and CL gains an optional 6-speed manual. “Reports of its demise are greatly exaggerated,” says an Acura spokesman.

Acura says it will focus on styling and performance to further differentiate the luxury vehicles from the Honda brand.

The 2003 TL-S are out and it the same damn 2002 model Plus the new Onstar BS!... Where is the refreshed 03 TL?!!!

Maybe the 2004 would not be radically different either... we will see.... I do not see Acura making anything to really compete with the #1 intro lux... the BMW 3 series. At least with BMW you get 325, 330i, 330 Ci and 330 ix and the M3. With that all you get a free "fire" and some blown engines

That's not the horse's mouth; that's the horse's ass.

I don't see anything in that article from Honda. Just a Wards article by one of their reporters Katherine telling us something about a scoop.

"Reports of its demise are exaggerated" says an Acura spokesman.

We don't know who this "spokesperson" is are in what context this statement was made. Just because it comes after that previous statement "There are no plans....6-speed manual" doesn't mean the spokesperson was answering to that particular statement.

Far from the horse's mouth.

Ok think about it though... why would acura keep the CL around? I mean the new accord has everything the 2003 CLS has and MORE.. and for less money. So the sales of the CL is die even more than it is now...

Now lets hope the CL is get a facelift for the 2005 model year.

I think that the spokesman was talking up to 2003. As he says, it gains a 6 speed. Well no shit they're not discontinuing the CL in 2003, that model is already out. I'm sure he'd dodge the question if you asked him about 2004 or 2005.

LOL, ya I'm kinda skeptical too. Same thing I was thinking while I was reading that.

I hope were wrong, and they do up the HP and rework the looks a little bit. Also move the CLS back to more luxurious interior. (I think they moved away from it in the 2003, plastic brushed aluminum?!?!?)

Time will tell.... sometimes I wonder if they'll just try and get rid of their inventory... then kill it off. Got me, I dunno...

Lets all watch our resale get even worse when the new Accord debuts... weeeeeeeeeeeeeee

im sick of hearing about all this "why keep the cl around because the accord is the same car" crap ................in 99 when the tl came out what did it really have over the accord v6.....25hp, HIDs and 16s............not really much different than the damn accord, yet it still managed to sell.................its the same logic behind a loaded camry and the es300, and they have the same engine........................why buy a escalade when you can buy a tahoe...........pilot, mdx, ........maxima, i35..........the list is endless..........what was around with 260hp/same features in 2000 when the CLS came out..........NOTHING....................acura cant change their cars every time somebody tries to play catch up

Exaclty!!!! It called progression people!!! You want Honda to keep the accord coupe what it is now? I am glad they bumped up the accord sedan and coupe because i know that the Acura line-up will see new goodies!

It seems like some people on this board just want to hate on the CL and how much it sucks etc., Yeah Acura didn't hit a home-run with the CL but with the way that the 6MT is selling i think they have taken notice.

Wards auto isn't going to make shit up. Why?? It's not like word on the CL is going to give them some sort of acclaim. In fact, i think that getting false info would be bad.

Now i can see why acura would want to say that the CL isn't going anywhere.....retain sales, resale value etc.,

However...... it seems that Honda knows that it must refresh it's lineup to keep up with everybody else....a la accord sedan/coupe, new SUV, the mdx getting a 3.8L 260HP engine, etc., I just don't see why they wouldn't do the same with the CL.

Think about this, when an entry level car improves (features, etc), so does its luxury brother. It's called progress. I know BMW likes to change their cars every 20 years or so, but that's not how most companies operate. Yes, there is a chance that the CL will die, but the Accord's improvements mean nothing to the CL. The CL would just be redesigned and once again be better than the accord. I believe the next CL will directly take on the G35 coupe. People say that car will kill the CL because it is so much better. It should be better since it came out 3/4 years after the CL! Then when the CL is ready to be redesigned, it will move from second best and back to best (in its market).

I just wish this new "sedan"(acura TSX) could have come with RWD and a smoking I-VTEC V6 or V8

Dammit acura, we need something to fight BMW

Yeah looks like we'll have to wait for the ivtec v6 for a bit. They'll make the initial run in the NSX first and then to the other cars.

What do you think the TSX is going to be???? Of course there will be people on this board and in the Mag's that will say you NEED to have RWD blah, blah blah......but for an entry level luxo sport sedan....there isn't anything wrong with FWD.

No I don't think they make up lies either. I think they honestly believe they think what they are saying is true. Even though it isn't. All I'm saying is that they reported something as "the word" without considering the source or it's out of context.

I wasn't that touche! Actually, I was refering to the posts in every new accord thread that say "the accord will kill the CL." I just disagree with that and was tired of hearing it constantly. You were the only person who said it in this thread and that's why i "attacked" you. Notyhing personal...except for my bad bmw joke.

Just BTW, the Bimmer suxs...

Actually, have you driven the 6-Speed CL? When I jump from my wife's E46 328i to my '03 CL 6-Speed I feel a much more weighted fly-wheel in the bimmer. In my limited experience with a friends 330CI it does feel the same.

I am truly torn now; considering my wife and I work together we obviously drive together. When I had the '01 Pumpkin I would toss about the decision when considering the issues. The CL was quicker than the bimmer but the bimmer handled much better. Now I am at a different point, the 6-Speed with the HLSD does wonders but can't match the bimmer. However, the much quicker acceleration is certainly a bonus.

I guess the point being, it seems that the CL manual has better throttle response than the 3-Series.

So with all this hoop-la with the rumors that the CL will die then would it be stupid to trade-in a '01 CLS (auto) for a '03 CLS (6MT)?
Or should someone jsut look for another car?

Key word in this is styling. If they fock up again, the CL is THROUGH. WIth the 3 coupe still king and the A4 coupe coming and the G35 coupe, they BETTER make the car more appealing visually.

Yes, coupes are still hot... Package it right & it'll sell.
3.5 v6, 280+hp (competitive engine to compete w/ G35 coupe & 350Z), rounder, more aggressive front bumper w/ OEM bodykit w/ lots of aftermarket support... Then it'll be a big hit.

Or I abandoning ship to an IS430, if it ever come out

They are talking about the 2004 model year for the new model and the 2003 model year and stats for the CL and TL.
