Check engine light...p1457...HELP
I recently bought a 2001 cls and after two 3 days the check engine light came on. I went to autozone and found that the code is P1457 (Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected). I believe the code for the gas cap is p1456. The most common problem that I've found for this code is the canister vent shut valve. I was wondering if this is something I could fix or would I have to take it to the dealer. The car isn't under warranty anymore so I would prefer to do it myself if it was fairly simple. Also, how long does it take for the check engine light to reset if it is a one-time problem like a gas cap or something? I am assuming it is alright to drive the car while I figure out the problem. I can notice nothing wrong with the car, but then again, I only had it three days. Any information on prices for parts, repairs, etc. would be helpful.

i also have a question about the check engine light. i'm about to buy an '03CLS and the check engine light is on. a honda dearlership said they hooked it up to the computer and it's the crank sensor. is that a huge problem?, and Acura is going to fix it under warranty, but might this be a problem again in the future? or lead to other problems?
thanks, any help is appreciated.

Hmmm... sometimes the crank sensor plug can come off. Are you a 6speed? I broke my crank sensor several times when debris from the broken pressure-plate basically ate it - it takes 2 mins to remove the crank sensor and visually check it.

All the dealers I talked to said since it was 5,000 miles over, it wouldn't be covered under warranty. Also in Pa, a car with a salvaged title can be upgraded to a reconstructed title once it passes a safety inspection. This is what my car has and this most definitely voids the warranty. (I didn't tell the dealers about that) I bought the car because it was only 10 grand so if something is wrong I won't have a problem having it fixed. The damage the car had was only body damage. They problem I have with taking it to the dealer is they will probably charge me a diagnostic fee (~$70 at least) to confirm the code that I got myself. I'd rather fix the problem myself therefore, so I don't get charge 200-300 dollars for a job I can do myself for whatever the price of the parts are. I.E. I don't want to waste money.

OK...listen to me. Since u say that u fuel ur car while running 99% of the time then thats most likely the problem. 1st...never do that again. Always keep the car off. 2nd...get the code cleared at autozone or whereever. 3rd...just wait. If it comes back on then u know u have a problem...if not then u know it was just the fueling process. I see 1456's and 1457's all the time. Very common code and 80% of the times it's because the gas cap was loose or they had the engine running while re-fueling. Trust me...you should be fine. If it comes back on after the fact...PM ME and I can somewhat tell u what to do. But I'm like 95% positive there's no real problem. Also...don't top-off ur fuel either...cause that can cause fuel to enter the two-way valve and then ur screwed. And since it's not covered under warranty then u'll pay a pretty penny. Lemme know if u need any more info.
