Changing your shift knob (6MT)

In case anybody wondered you can put an NSX knob on a CL-S MT.

However when I removed my shift knob I saw that it holds the boot onto it with a two prong fork. For those of you who put on a different shift knob... how did you get your leather boot to go flush against the bottom of your new knob? I'd rather not change the leather boot, if possible.

Thanks in advance!

actually mine just sits there, i've got a razo racing aluminum knob which you can adjust the height on, so i set it at a lower position and the boot kinda just rests just below it, most people don't even notice that the two aren't connected.

i've heard other people that have bought new momo knobs also purchased the momo boot and changed the whole thing out so that it fit snug.

more of just a personal taste.

And I bought a new perforated leather boot that looks a lot better then the OEM vinyl.

(it looks great with my TeamVoodoo titanium knob too!)

Here is my setup. I kept the stock boot and just folded the boot down around the edges of the momo knob. Used a zip tie to secure the boot around the knob by sliding the zip tie into the existing holes of the stock boot and around the knob. Although it does slide down when I bring to the dealer for service, it only comes down if you really tug down on it or slap the boot down hard. For me, it hasn't come down from off the knob yet! Pretty simple and I think it looks good.

That’s what I did so it matches up to the knob perfectly.

When I had my Momo knob, I took that factory fork thing off. Cut the little white zip tie holding it on, then zip tied the inner portion of the boot around the new knobs screw in end cap. Then screwed the knob on. It sat flush & held well.

it doesn't. i made it fit

if you try to screw it on it will crack the threads inside the knob, and the 2 clips on the bottom are larger than the ring so u need to cut both off and make the boot stay up with some creativity (black tape under the boot worked for me)

I appreciate the ideas. I will look into getting a new leather boot and then install that and the NSX knob. In a few weeks I'll post the picture.

Yes both the TSX and the S2000 knobs screw on perfectly, I've used both. I just left the stock clip on the boot, looks okay. THe TSX has red shift pattern, 2000 has black. the TSX retails for double the S2000 price. both have the black perforated leather ring and a silver top. no pix right now.

I got the TSX shift knob today...after i install it, the shift boot drops down, and because of the shape of the knob, there is no way i can not tighten the stock clip on the knob,,,,what should i do ? thanks for any help,,pix would be good.

Did you see my pics? 2nd picture.

Buy a rubber stopper from any hardware store, use a drill bit to drill a hole, slide over shifter-rod, adjust boot as necessary, holds it tight and snug indefinitely.

I used a rubber stopper with a hole in the center, but a big rubber washer would work fine too . you slide that on the stick, place the stock boot over it, and walah! the boot holds up. mine fit nicely and came with a metal washer to screw on first so you can screw the knob down against it so the shift pattern is straight. it's the easiest mode I've done besides switch out interior light bulbs.

I have the S2k knob (not installed yet) and plan on doing the rubber washer procedure. I cant believe how heavy the S2k knob is compred to the CL-S6, its like 5lbs.

Yes they are both the same just red or black shift diagrams, very heavy and makes for a great shift feel. the stock knob is too tall, lightweight, and plastic. You never know it til you replace it. The all metal knobs get too hot here in the sun but the TSX and the S2000 knobs with the leather band give something to hold on to when the car has been sitting in the sun.

Granted this is a CL forum, but I thought it may inspire a few that run ito fitment hurdles.

If you are determined enough, you can get any knob on any shifter. I fabe'd this Porsche 996 Turbo (which has a flat, rectangular shifter instead of round and tubular shifter) knob on to my GT-S6. Both cars have the exact same 6 speed pattern so it was a perfect match and the grip is wonderful.
